The GET-ligaen (formerly: Hovedserien, 1. divisjon, Eliteserien, UPC-ligaen) is the highest professional league in Norwegian ice hockey.

History

The league was founded in 1934 under the name Hovedserien. The league kept this name until the war-induced cessation of gaming operations in 1940. When gaming operations were resumed in 1945, the league changed its name to 1. divisjon (German: Erste Division). This name led it to 1990, then a complete reorganization and the renaming in elite series followed. In 2004, the Norwegian cable television company UPC became the main sponsor of the elite series, which resulted in the league being renamed UPC-ligaen. Since UPC changed its name to GET in 2006, the league was renamed to its current name. The current Norwegian champions are the Stavanger Oilers (2017).

Mode

In the 2009/10 season, ten teams played in the GET league, and nine after the insolvency of IK Comet, most of them from south-eastern Norway. Initially, these teams will play 44 matches in the league, with the eight best teams after the regular season qualifying for the play-offs. The two last placed teams will meet the two first placed teams of the second division, Divisjon 1, in a promotion and relegation round. The winners of these games will play in the GET league in the following season.
