Golf is a sport that is not played by the masses in Europe, or at least in German-speaking countries. Although there are numerous publicly accessible golf courses today, golf still has the status of a “sport of the rich” for many. There are around 35,000 golf courses worldwide. The most likely and generally accepted assumption is that golf originated in Scotland. In any case, the first written rule comes from the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, a Scottish golf club established and maintained in 1744.
The first regulations, most of which are still in force today, date back to 1754 from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The rules themselves contain 34 basic rules. In detail, these rules are very comprehensive, since the naturalness and diversity of the golf courses can create many imaginable situations, which must be clarified. In addition to these general regulations, there are also a number of appendices which, for example, specify exactly which club shapes are permitted or what the ball must be made of.
Explanation of the Golf Rules
Sports rules The goal is to get the ball from the starting point (“tee”) to the 10.8 cm finish hole with as few shots as possible. A golf course normally has 9 to 18 holes for this purpose.
Each of these holes is now evaluated in terms of difficulty. This happens by looking at how many strokes a very good player would need on average for this course. Putting (punching in the ball) is generally set with two strokes. This is then used as a basis to determine the so-called “par”, i.e. how many strokes are considered “normal”. A very good player plays with a handicap of 0. Now it is a matter of playing this value on this course (“hole”). Either you play “under par”, i.e. even better than expected, or “over par”, i.e. less good. At the end of the game, the overall score of the game is also calculated with this score. This provision of the par is left to the national federations themselves and is not, as one might assume, recorded by a uniform international regulation. Regarding the forms of play there are two possibilities, the counting game and the hole game. In the counting game, the decisive factor is how many points can be scored in comparison to the entire field of participants on the course. The placings are then determined on the basis of a tableau – so you play almost alone against the course. The hole game, on the other hand, is about beating a direct opponent, i.e. winning more holes than that opponent.
Both variants can be counted differently, i.e. gross and net. With the gross count, the tableau is created with the actual points. The net score, on the other hand, takes into account the individual performance characteristics of the players and includes them accordingly. Here the net result is adjusted with a factor (“handicap”) – i.e. a weaker player gets a bonus – in order to make an exciting game possible even with different skills of the opponents.
Up to 14 different clubs are allowed in the game itself. You know the typical picture of a caddy accompanying the player and passing the clubs. Caddies advise the player and are especially important in professional golf tournaments. There are special clubs for every situation with differences in hardness, shape, shaft length and the angle of inclination of the clubface (“loft”). Golfers speak of “wood”, “wedge”, “putter” or “iron”.
