Swimming is not only a popular leisure sport, but also a very popular and exciting sport in a professional context. This was already done, for example, in 1696 with the publication “L’art de nager” (“The Art of Swimming”) for breaststroke in France. Breaststroke was the only type of swimming from that time until the 1950s for which precise rules and definitions were laid down. In 1837, the first competition swims took place in London’s indoor swimming pools. In addition to breaststroke, there was also a competition in side swimming for the first time. David Armbruster and Jack Sieg from the University on Iowa invented butterfly swimming in 1934/1935. The naming was based on the typical flapping movement with the arms, which resembles the flapping of a butterfly’s wings.

Like the disciplines of athletics, swimming has been an integral part of the Olympic Games since the beginning of modern times and still is today. In both sports it is possible to practice the sport without any aids. Since that time, the disciplines and the type of competition have not changed much, only new types of swimming have been added and unique things such as obstacle swimming have been deleted.

In addition to swimming in the hall, there is also swimming in open water over long distances. In halls only up to 1.5 km is swum in lanes. Explanation of the rules for swimming

The swimming styles used in competitions are breaststroke, crawlstroke, backstroke and butterfly swimming. Layer swimming was developed to add another discipline. It unites and combines all four basic styles. Freestyle swimming is also possible, in which the swimming style can be freely selected.

There are different long distances in individual competitions as well as in the relay swim. These are 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m and in the relays 4 × 50 m, 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m.

The rules for swimming are pleasingly tight and short. First of all, there are the basic requirements for the pools in which the competitions are held. In principle, the following requirements must be met. The lanes must be 25 or 50 m long, one lane must have a width of 2.5 m, and these must be separated in the pool with lines (plastic). These are often an important point of orientation for the swimmers, as they also have markings over sections of the track. Especially when swimming backstroke, where one does not see the stop, these are of special importance. Two further criteria are a water depth of at least 1.6 m (2.0 m for Olympics and World Championships) and a water temperature of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Depending on the continent or even only on the place, the condition of the water can be very different. However, there are no special regulations for this.
