The French Women’s Handball Championship, called “Division 1” (D1), is a handball competition that represents the top of the women’s handball hierarchy in France. The competition takes place annually in the form of a championship involving twelve professional clubs. A championship season begins in the summer and ends the following spring. The championship was created in 1952.

With twenty-two French championship titles won between 1989 and 2018, Metz Handball is the most successful club.

History

The French 7-a-side handball championship was created in 1952-1953. Before 1952, 11-a-side handball gave rise to a French championship. Simon Siégel School is the last sacred formation at 11 and the first sacred at 7, which leads to confusion about the beginnings of the modern championship, in 1952-1953, as in the case of boys.

Division 1 has twelve clubs since the 2017-2018 season. The latter is relegated to Division 2.
