The French Women’s Handball Championship, called “Division 1” (D1), is a handball competition that represents the top of the women’s handball hierarchy in France. History
The French 7-a-side handball championship was created in 1952-1953. Before 1952, 11-a-side handball gave rise to a French championship. Simon Siégel School is the last sacred formation at 11 and the first sacred at 7, which leads to confusion about the beginnings of the modern championship, in 1952-1953, as in the case of boys.
Division 1 has twelve clubs since the 2017-2018 season. The latter is relegated to Division 2.
