The Major Hockey League or Supreme Hockey League, better known by its Russian acronym VHL is an Asian ice hockey league (Russia, China and Kazakhstan) whose level is one step below the KHL.
History
In 2008, the Continental Hockey League (KHL) was created, bringing together the former Russian Superliga and teams from Kazakhstan, Belarus and Latvia.
In 2010, it is the turn of the second Russian level, the Vyschaïa Liga, to be replaced by a new multinational league. It became the Vyshaïa Hokkeïnaïa Liga (VHL). It is no longer organised by the FHR but by an independent body which is responsible for the KHL. The VHL tends to become a youth development league. Its teams are gradually becoming the school clubs of the KHL teams. Indeed, only seven players over the age of 29 can be lined up in a team.
It is organised into three pools of 10 teams per geographical area: Eastern, Central and Western divisions. Three clubs from Kazakhstan and one from Ukraine are taking part in the competition. Twenty-four teams participate in the playoffs but without any promotion to the next level, the KHL. The winner of the VHL wins the Bratine Cup.
