Created during the 2013-2014 snooker season, it is the first ranking tournament to be held in India. This first edition will be held from 14 to 18 October 2013 at the Meridien Hotel in New Delhi. The format of the competition is the same as the one introduced that same year: a single table of 128 players, mostly professional, according to a direct elimination formula.
The Indian Snooker and Pool Federation’s contract covers a three-year period, so the Indian Open would be held until at least 2015.
The next edition, the 2014-2015 season, initially scheduled for October 2014, is postponed to March 2015 due to parliamentary elections in the state of Maharashtra, of which Bombay is the capital.
The 2015-2016 season edition does not take place and the tournament is again scheduled for July 2016 for the following season.
