Rugby is a sport that is the archetype of football. The rugby game later gave rise not only to American football and Canadian football, but also to a whole series of similar games and entire sports. Rugby initially belonged to the English Football Association (FA), from which it split off in 1871 due to disputes, and finally the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was founded. This association is also largely responsible for standardising the rules of the Rugby School and establishing a uniform game. The first international match took place on 27 March 1871 between Scotland and England. Thus the Rugby Union – one of the two most widespread ways of playing today – was founded.
The second dominant game today is the Rugby League. This came into being in 1895, when there were again discrepancies. This time within the newly founded Rugby Football Union. The disputes were sparked when the amateur idea was slowly lost in this sport. However, this changed very late in 1995, but then also in the Rugby Union and since then professional players are also allowed there.
Rugby is extremely popular in Great Britain and in all former British states. The Commonwealth is undoubtedly the centre of this sport, but it is also very popular in France and the USA.
Explanation of the rules of rugby
The goal of the game is to place the ball across the playing field in the opponent’s end zone and score points or simply score goals. In this respect, there are hardly any differences here, e.g. to American football. The poles are five to six metres apart and have a crossbar at a height of three metres.
The pitch measures 100 m in length and 70 m in width. There are 15 players in the Rugby Union and 13 players in the Rugby League. There is also a variant with seven players (Rugby Union), which has been included in the Olympic programme. The game is divided into two halves of 40 minutes each.
Unlike football, the game is not stopped every time the player with the ball is knocked down, but continues if no foul is played. In addition, the player in possession of the ball is obliged to release the ball if he himself lies on the ground. A rule that allows the game to continue and for another player to take the ball. Furthermore, it is only allowed to pass the ball backwards with the hand, so that a space gain is not made possible by throwing the ball forwards.

The ball is placed on an imaginary line parallel to the side outline. Otherwise, there are two more ways to score goals. The points are awarded as follows: A try is worth five points, a conversion is worth two points and a drop kick or free kick is worth three points. If a supposedly clear try was prevented by the opposing team with a foul, a penalty attempt can even be imposed. This would then result in five points like a try. Whoever has more points in the end wins the game.
In rugby it is allowed or even necessary to attack the player with the ball, but he must only be brought to the ground clean. All other actions such as outlining, pushing, etc. will always be counted as fouls. Furthermore, it is only allowed to attack the player with the ball.
