UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw (also known as UFC Fight Night on ESPN+ 1 or UFC Fight Night 143) was a mixed martial arts event produced by Ultimate Fighting Championship that took place on January 19, 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
History
The event marked the debut of the five-year promotion contract with ESPN (USA only) and the first to be broadcast on the ESPN digital broadcast platform. Cejudo (left) is the first Olympic champion to become a UFC champion. Meanwhile, Dillashaw (right) is the first challenger in a champion vs. down division champion combat.
The event was spearheaded by a UFC Flyweight Championship fight between 2008 Olympic gold medalist in wrestling and current champion Henry Cejudo and two-time UFC roosterweight champion T.J. Dillashaw. If Dillashaw wins, he will become the third man to be champion in two divisions simultaneously and the fourth overall fighter (after Conor McGregor in UFC 205, Daniel Cormier in UFC 226 and Amanda Nunes in UFC 232). This will be the fifth time in UFC history that champions from different divisions are fighting for the same title, after UFC 94, UFC 205, UFC 226 and UFC 232. The promotion is reportedly expected to dissolve the flyweight division sometime in 2019. Initially, the bout was expected to take place at UFC 233, but on December 5 the bout was transferred to this event.
A flyweight fight between Rachael Ostovich and Paige VanZant was originally cancelled on Nov. 20 after Ostovich was attacked by her husband, resulting in a broken orbital bone. However, after hearing a second opinion from a doctor, Ostovich got a green light to fight. After announcing that former NFL player Greg Hardy would make his UFC debut at this event, the decision to put him on the same billboard with Ostovich generated negative reactions as Hardy was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and sentenced to 18 months probation, in addition to being suspended from 10 games by the NFL. The decision to put him on the same billboard with Ostovich generated negative reactions as Hardy was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and was sentenced to 18 months probation, in addition to being suspended from 10 games by the NFL. The charges and suspension were dropped shortly thereafter after the victim failed to appear in court to testify, but Hardy’s arrest and trial were controversial. UFC President Dana White stated that Ostovich “agreed” with having Hardy on the same billboard as her.
A flyweight fight between KSW flyweight champion Ariane Lipski and newcomer Joanne Calderwood was initially scheduled for UFC 233. However, on Dec. 2 it was reported that the fight had been rescheduled for this event.
As a result of the cancellation of UFC 233, a flyweight fight between Joseph Benavidez and Deiveson Figueiredo was linked to this event.17 However, the following day, the promotion clarified the plans, which indicated that the fight was cancelled and that Benavidez would serve as a replacement for the main fight in the event that Cejudo or Dillashaw could not fight in the event. It was later announced that, although still a reserve, Benavidez would face Dustin Ortiz in a rematch of his unanimous victory in UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Swanson in November 2014.
Thomas Almeida and Cory Sandhagen were expected to meet at the event. However, on December 22, it was announced that Sandhagen would face John Lineker at the event. On January 10, 2019, Lineker was forced to retire from his fight due to a rib injury. He was replaced by newcomer Mario Bautista.
Glover Teixeira was expected to face Ion Cutelaba in this event. However, on January 10, 2019, Cutelaba retired from the fight due to an injury. Currently, the promotion is looking for a rival for Teixeira.Cutelaba was replaced by Karl Roberson.
Randy Brown would face Chance Rencountre but retired a week before the event. Dwight Grant was announced as his replacement, but was later reported unfit to fight over eye problems. Newcomer Kyle Stewart was announced as Rencountre’s new opponent.
