The dream of every German ice hockey player is probably a contract in the NHL. Off across the pond to America. Ice hockey, basketball, American football and baseball are among the big sports there. Even football is not as popular as the sport on the ice. There have not been many German players who have been able to celebrate great success in the NHL.
Who belongs to the most successful and what they still do today, you can find here:
Marco Sturm
Probably the best known German player in the NHL is Marco Sturm. The wingman started his career at the EV Landshut. At the tender age of 18, he was already one of the team’s top performers. Also in the NHL it went steeply uphill. In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected 21st in the first round by the San Jose Sharks, and after his first three goals were all decisive for the game, he was named Rookie of the Month. He became the team’s top performer and crowd favourite. All in all, he made 938 players in the NHL, a record for a German player. The most goals and the most points were scored by another German star, who is also mentioned here.
And what is Marco Sturm doing today? That’s right! That’s exactly this Marco Sturm, who has been national coach and general manager of the German national team since the summer of this year. With him it should go further to the top.
Greg Mueller
Greg Mueller proves that things can be different. His career was really more colourful. He is actually always a Canadian and had the best qualifications as a player in the NHL. But not everyone knows that he was born in Schaffhausen and played in the DEL from 1992 to 2000. Among others he was on the course for Mad Dogs Munich, Ratinger Löwen, EC Hannover and the EHC Trier. However, Greg Mueller is now a professional poker player and has already won more than 2.5 million dollars in card games. He’s the proud owner of two WSOP bracelets, the world’s most prestigious poker tour, and has also won big prize money online at the most prestigious tournaments, including PokerStars Sunday Million. By the way: Greg Mueller is not the only ice hockey pro to have devoted himself to the game of poker. A few days ago, superstar Darcy Tucker twittered his love of the game.
Dany Heatley
He is the most successful German player in the NHL. He also played like Marco Sturm on the left wing. At the age of 20 he already made the leap into the professional league and became part of the Atlanta Trashers. His first season was directly so successful that he led all rookies with 67 scorer points and was finally elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team. The 34-year-old scored a total of 791 points, scored the most goals (372) and at the same time scored the most submissions (419). No other German player has been so good so far.
And what does Heatley do today? He still plays ice hockey. No longer in the NHL but with the DEL he can certainly still live well. For about two weeks now he has been playing a successful season with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers.
Olaf Kölzig
Many German players didn’t make it to the NHL, especially goalkeepers. But Olaf Kölzig is one of the few exceptional talents. He certainly benefited from his parents’ move to Canada, where he started his career in the junior league British Columbia Junior Hockey League. His first NHL appearance saw him score 12 goals in his first two games. Not a good start. But at the Washington Capitals he prevailed and played from 1980 – 2008 on the goalkeeper position. All in all, he scored 90.6 percent of the shots on goal, an outstanding quota. After over 800 games, he finished in the NHL. And today? Since 2005, König, together with former ice hockey player Stu Barnes and entrepreneur Dennis Loman, has owned the Tri-City Americans, his junior team from the Canadian Junior League NHL.
Uwe Krupp
You can certainly write a book about Uwe Krupp. Perhaps with his extraordinary career he is also the most important German player in the NHL. His career began in the DEL with the Cologne sharks and was voted best defender and All-Star Team. In 1986 he moved to the NHL to the Buffalo Sabres. His biggest success: He was the first German player to win the Stanley Cup. He scored the 1-0 winning goal in the third overtime of the fourth final match against the Florida Panthers. Even today, Krupp will stay with ice hockey. He has been a coach since 2005. After training the German team from 2005 to 2011, he went to the Cologne Sharks until 2014, before he is still coach of the Eisbären Berlin today. In September of this year there was the happy news that Krupp became a father for the fourth time. Isabell is the newest member of the family.
