The origins of freestyle skiing
Freestyle skiing often appears on television as if it were one of the many fashionable trend sports that come out of nowhere and disappear into nirvana almost as quickly. In fact, however, it is a traditional alpine sport that can look back on more than 30 years of history.
Freestyle skiing, which combines five of the alpine skiing disciplines, was first regulated by the FIS in 1980. Six years later, the first World Championships took place. The concept is very simple:
The athletes have to complete various disciplines and receive points for their performance from a jury.
- The ski with the best score has the best chance of winning.
- The different point disciplines in freestyle skiing
Freestyle skiing is divided into five disciplines. These are: Aerials, Moguls, Half Pipe, Big Air and Slopestyle. The discipline Acro is no longer performed.
Aerials
Aerials are jumps. The sportsmen drive thereby an almost vertically running runway in the height and must show different artificial jumps. These include:
- somersaults
- rotations and
- Straddle.
The individual figures can be combined. Each jump has a predetermined degree of difficulty. The execution will be evaluated by the jury. The final score is calculated by multiplying the degree of difficulty by the number of execution counters.
Moguls
The term “mogul” refers to a mogul slope. Two jumps of one’s own choice must be completed during the passage. The following are judged:
- Technology (50 percent)
- Driving speed (25 percent)
- the jump execution (25 percent)
Aerials, Moguls, Half Pipe, Big Air and Slopestyle are the point disciplines in freestyle skiing.

Half Pipe
In principle, the discipline Half Pipe is comparable to the Aerials, but this time the tricks take place in a ramp. The performance and difficulty will be evaluated again. The total number of points results from the fact that the partial points of a journey are added together.
Big Air
Big Air is regarded by many athletes as the supreme discipline of freestyle skiing. Over a huge jump, the athletes jump far up into the air and have to perform a variety of tricks during the flight, which should have as high a degree of difficulty as possible.
The judges pay special attention to the following for their evaluation:
- the style of tricks
- their difficulty
- the height at which the tricks were shown,
- and the landing.
Big Air combines the aerials with a large half pipe ramp, but there is only one flight.
Slopestyle
Freestyle skiing always takes its cue from simple skating, including slopestyle. For this purpose, a facility is set up that is reminiscent of a well-equipped skate park. The individual elements were deliberately positioned so that the athletes have the chance to make as many combinations as possible.
The grading is therefore not only based on difficulty and execution, but also on creativity: How does the driver think about how he can combine the individual elements he finds on the course in a meaningful way?
Acro
As already mentioned, the discipline Acro is no longer part of the official competitions of freestyle skiing, but it is always included in smaller events. It is the ballet discipline of the sport. The skis were bent open at the ends. That’s why we speak of Twintips.
The slope was smooth and slightly inclined. The aim was to perform as attractive figures as possible and to dance along the way. Difficulty and quality of the execution were graded.
Nothing for beginners
Perhaps you have an enthusiastic and advanced driver in your circle of acquaintances who can introduce you to the theory. With a little luck he will also teach you some skiing techniques and tricks on the slopes.
Keep in mind, however, that freeskiing can never be a beginner sport, but is aimed exclusively at the very advanced and experienced skier. Only when you have mastered your skis from the ground up should you dare to start freeskiing.
Learn freeskiing
For your winter holiday or weekend excursion, choose a ski resort where freeski lessons are offered. You can be sure that this is possible wherever there are special freeski slopes or parks. Therefore, research thoroughly on the Internet.
Ask at the tourist information. If you have found what you are looking for, then call the regional ski school, because freeski courses are usually well attended and therefore often booked out quickly.
Freeski lessons
With an experienced teacher, they have a good chance of understanding the basics of the new trend sport in a few practice hours. You can then work on perfecting them on your own or with the support of friends.
If you can afford it, you can hire a private ski instructor to learn the freeski techniques. In individual lessons the various contents can be taught and practiced in a much more concentrated way.
However, group lessons are usually much more fun and motivating. Especially in a group you can cope better with small setbacks and often don’t take your own mistakes too tragically. In comparison with the other group members, you learn to assess your own performance correctly.
- Acrobatics and artistic jumps in freeskiing
- The Freeskiing is characterized by spectacular jumps and figures
- Aerial acrobatics during freeskiing
Spectacular and attractive are the figures, jumps and driving techniques shown during freeskiing. In order for them to be executed exactly, the freeskier needs a very special material: the skis not only have highly curved edges at the tip, but also at the end. These allow the skis to go backwards as well as backwards onto a mogul slope or a hill.
We are happy to present some of the most spectacular tricks in more detail. However, freeskiing is an extremely trendy and fast-paced sport, which is mainly performed by very young athletes. Therefore the exercises and standards are also subject to a very fast and constant fluctuation.
An important part of the freeskiing tricks are the so-called aerials. These are aerial jumps and aerial acrobatics, which are performed by descending an artificial jump. The jump surface of the ski jump points almost vertically upwards. In the Big Airs area there is a very large hill. The tricks are comparable in their execution, but look much more spectacular.
Since a greater height is achieved when jumping off, there is more possibility in the air to carry out the figures. Thus, some elements are also executed twice.
Acrobatic elements
Just as important as the aerials are the acrobatic insoles that are shown when driving through the moguls. Here not only extremely fast and aggressive riding styles alternate, but also jumps and aerial acrobatics are shown with a run over the moguls.
The most common are slides, but the somersault is now also allowed and is driven a lot. When a mogul passes through, two jumps have to be shown in the competition.
But also tricks with traction are well feasible in the Moguls. Here the driving direction changes and there are several figures with rotations.
