Division 1, often referred to as Ettan, has been the third highest division in Swedish football since 2006. The name Division 1 appeared before in Swedish football and once referred to the first-class Allsvenskan and later for several years the second division.

History of the third league

When the Allsvenskan was introduced in 1924, it was called Division 1. At that time, there was no official substructure under the elite series, although there was ascent and descent within a staggered league pyramid. It was not until 1928 that the lower leagues received their official status within the league system. This also created the third league, known as Division 3. Eight squadrons with different numbers of teams played out the relay winners, of which two met in a subsequent round of promotion in the first and second leg to determine the four promoted to the second league. The north of Sweden, however, were not included in the league system and the clubs in northern Sweden had to wait until 1952 for participation in the higher class football.

When the second league was reformed in 1932 by increasing the number of squadrons to four groups, the two first squadrons were promoted to the second league and the squadron winners were automatically promoted to the second league. In some cases, the individual regional third leagues split into two squadrons, so that the respective squadron winners had to compete against each other in deciding matches.

In 1947, a big cut was made when, as part of a reform of the league system, the second leagues were combined into two squadrons and at the same time the third league was reduced from 17 third-league squadrons, which had been created mainly during the Second World War, to four groups of ten teams each. The promotion was regulated in such a way that the respective relay winners were placed in the second division, while the last three teams were relegated to the fourth division. Five years later the number of relay teams was increased to nine, as northern Sweden was included in the league system. As the second league was extended in parallel, the promotion and relegation mode continued to apply. As early as 1955, the mode was rethought, as southern Sweden was treated in the same way as the north of the country, although the number of clubs differed considerably. The number of squadrons was therefore increased to twelve in order to do justice to this unequal distribution. The four relay winners in the north played out two promoted teams at the end of the regular season, while in the remaining third league squadrons the respective champions were promoted directly.

In the 1957/58 season, the season was changed to the calendar year. As a result, the teams did not meet twice as usual due to the extended season, but played an additional third game.

Since the second league was again reduced in the early 1970s, the promotion mode was changed. In 1971, eight promoted teams were determined in four regional promotion groups, from 1972 onwards there were only six teams in three groups. This mode was maintained until 1980, before the groups were abolished in the 1981 season and the twelve relay winners played out four places in the second league with the four teams placed in the respective second league squadrons on the relegation places in two rounds in each case in the first and second leg. After two years, there was another change, with the twelve teams now playing six promoted teams against each other.

1986 it came again to a Ligareform in Sweden

This made itself noticeable beside a new classification in individual league stages above all in the name: The first league was still called Allsvenskan, but the name Division 1 changed to the second highest level. All further subclass leagues were downgraded parallel in the name one, so that for example the third league traded from now on under the name Division 2. At the same time, the number of relays was reduced to four groups of 14 teams each. As in the late 1940s, the respective relay winners were promoted directly to the second division, while the three worst placed clubs were relegated to the fourth division.

Four years later, however, the concentration was partially reversed and the league was divided into eight squadrons with eight teams. In a spring championship a first round was played, whose winner took part in the autumn championship of the second league, while the runners-up in the third league autumn championship played with the relegates of the second league spring championship for the participation in the second league spring season. This half-year mode was maintained for two years and from the 1993 season onwards was again played in a uniform league throughout the year.

In six squadrons of twelve teams each, the champions qualified directly for the second division, while the six runners-up in the first and second legs played two rounds with the two teams placed in the second division for two more second-placed places.

In 1999, there was a further concentration in higher Swedish football. The two squadrons of the second division 1 were combined. Twelve of the 28 teams had to relegate directly, while two other teams played in relegation matches against the best two relay winners, who had previously been played in two group phases of three clubs each. The newly created single-track second division was given the name Superettan. Since the lower leagues kept their name at the same time, the name Division 1 disappeared from the Swedish league pyramid. From then on, the six relay winners played each other three times to move up to the second division.

The 2006 season also saw concentration in the third division. At that time, a reform took place in the Swedish football league pyramid, in which the formerly six regional third leagues were combined into two seasons. While the champions of the 2005 season continued to play for promotion, the three clubs behind them in the individual seasons qualified directly for the new third league. The six fifth-placed teams played out four more teams in two groups, who could play in the third league in the following season. The two last placed teams of each of the third division squadrons were particularly hard hit, as they were relegated from the third division to the fifth division.

The name Division 1 was reintroduced for the new third division. For the subleagues underneath, the further numbering applies, so that Division 2, for example, designates the fourth league. For the 2018 season, Division 1 was increased to 16 teams each.

Mode

Division 1, introduced in 2006, consists of 32 teams, divided into two groups called Division 1 Norra and Division 1 Södra, each with 16 teams. The clubs compete against each other in the classic league mode in both outward and return matches.

The two champions of the two Division 1 leagues will go straight to the Superettan, while the two teams in second place in the two Division 1 leagues will compete in a relegation round against the clubs ranked 13th and 14th in the Superettan. The six teams that reach places 14 to 16 in the Division 1 leagues will be relegated to the respective Division 2 leagues and replaced by their champions.
