The South African Second Division Championship, or National First Division, was known as the Mvela Golden League (MGL) until 2007.
Launched in 2004, this professional competition is organised as a single national pool of 16 clubs (18 until 2004-05). Previously, there were two geographical groups (Coastal Stream, 14 clubs, and Inland Stream, 16 clubs).
The winner joins the first division, the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The second ticket for the elite is awarded to the winner of a play-off between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of the MGL and the 15th of the PSL. The last two are relegated to regional leagues.
