The Russian Second Divisionis the third professional level of football in Russia.
The Second Division is geographically divided into five zones: West (Northwest Europe), Central (North and East European Russia), South (South European Russia), Ural-Povolzhye (South Urals and Siberian West), and East (Rest of Siberia). The number of clubs per zone varies from year to year. In 2006, there were 81 clubs, now there are 56 teams.
The winners for each zone are automatically promoted to the Russian First Division. Those who finish last in each zone are relegated to the Amateur Football League.
