Liga 2, formerly known as Divizia B, is the second division of the Romanian football championship. Semiprofessional in nature and managed by a committee delegated by the Romanian Football Federation, for importance is preceded only by the Liga I.
Format
In Romania the cadet tournament, like the whole club football system, was never stable. There have been numerous format changes, and several team failures. Divizia B was born two years after the maximum championship, but it was never a single group, coming to include even nine groups.
In the early 2000s, Liga II was divided into two parallel groups (Seria I and Seria II, West and East) with 16 teams each. The first two teams of each round were promoted to Liga I. The last four classified in each division were relegated to Liga III.
Only from 2016-2017, and on an experimental basis, the category is composed of a single round of 20 teams. The first two ranked teams are promoted to the top division, while the last five are relegated to the third series. The third classified enters the play-off promotion with a club of the highest series.
