The League of Ireland Premier Division is the highest level of the League of Ireland, the football league of the Irish league. The league, like the other levels of the league, is managed by the FAI after the merger with the League of Ireland in 2007.
Formula
It consists of a double round of ten Italian teams that face each other with the formula of round-trip from March to November. The teams play a total of 36 games with the first classified that, in addition to winning the title of Ireland, earns the qualification to the second round of the preliminary Champions League. Second and third place earns them access to the second preliminary round of the Europa League. The team that finished last is relegated to the First Division; the penultimate and third last face off in a play-off in which the loser goes to the interdivisional play-off with the winner of the match between the second and third classified of the First Division.
Since 1985, the year of its establishment, the Premier Division has changed its format marginally, always including a number of participating teams ranging from 12 to 10 (the last change dates back to 2008, with the decrease in the number of teams from 12 to 10) and varying only the period of play in 2003 (thus using a format closer to that of the Baltic and Scandinavian countries). The only important change to the format of the Premier Division dates back to 1991 when, at the end of the championship, the ranking was divided into two groups: one including the first six teams (who would fight for the title) and the other the last six (fighting for salvation).
