The Segunda League is the second highest league in Portuguese football. It was founded in 1990 under the name Segunda Divisão de Honra (Second Honorary Division) as a single-track league and moved in front of the three-track Segunda Divisão, which thus became the third highest Portuguese league. When the Portuguese professional league association LPFP took over the first two leagues in 2000, the second-highest league was given the name Segunda League (Second League). In the seasons 2002/03 to 2005/06 the official name of the 2nd Portuguese Football League was Liga de Honra, the Portuguese name for honorary division.
As of the 2007/08 season, the league name was marketed commercially, although Liga de Honra continued to be used in everyday language. It is professionally run and managed by the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional, organised by the professional clubs and the Portuguese Football Association. The league initially consisted of 18 clubs, which are played in a first and second round. By the 2004/05 season, the three first-placed clubs had moved up to the first league, the SuperLiga, and the three last-placed clubs to the Segunda Divisão Portuguesa. From the 2006/07 season, the professional leagues were reduced to 16 participants, which is why in the 2005/06 season only two promoted, but four relegated were played out.
In the 2006/07 season, the league was named after the main sponsor in Liga Vitalis. In the 2010/11 season the official name was Liga Orangina. For the 2012/13 season, the league, renamed Segunda Liga again, was increased to 22 clubs (with 6 second division teams (Benfica, Sporting, Porto, Braga, Guimaraes, Maritimo) and there are two promoted and two relegated teams.
After being increased to 24 clubs in the 2014/15 season, the league will be reduced again to 22 clubs in 2016/17. Therefore, five teams will relegate in 2016. In 2017/18, only 20 teams will participate.
