The 2018-19 season is the 85th edition of the Ekstraklasa, the highest level of football in Poland since its creation in 1927. Legia Warsaw are the current defending champions, having been crowned champions for the thirteenth time in their history.

Format of competition

The season has two phases. In the first phase, called the regular season, each team must play against each other twice in home and away matches for a total of 30 matches. In the second phase, the top eight qualify for the championship round and the last eight teams will play the relegation round. In these two rounds played at the same time each team will play against the other seven twice, once again in round-trip matches for a total of 14 matches.

At the end of the season the team with the most points in the championship round becomes champion and qualifies for the second preliminary round of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League, while the teams that finish second and third qualify for the first preliminary round of the 2019-20 UEFA European League.

The last two teams in the relegation round will automatically be relegated to the I League.

Promotions and relegations

As last season, the last two teams were relegated to the I League and were replaced by the two best teams of the I League 2017-18.

LKS Nieciecza and Sandecja Nowy Sącz finished 15th and 16th, respectively, and were relegated to the I League as a result. The Miedź Legnica and Zagłębie Sosnowiec finished first and second respectively, and earned promotion to the Ekstraklasa.
