The 1st league (sponsor name Nice 1st league) is the second highest league in Polish football. It was founded on 30 May 1948 and was played for the first time in 1949. From 1949 until the 2007/08 season, the competition was called the 2nd league, from the 2008/09 season the 1st league. In the first years the mode was changed again and again. So the league consisted of either one, two or four squadrons. From the summer of 1962, the season was no longer held in the calendar year, but the league was adapted to the system of the major European football leagues. Since the 2008/09 season, 18 clubs have been playing in the 1st Polish League. The first and the second qualify directly for the Ekstraklasa. The last three clubs are directly relegated to the 2nd league.
