The Primera División de Paraguay (official División Profesional de la Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol) is the highest football league in Paraguay. Between February and December, twelve teams play an Apertura and a Clausura championship on 44 match days.
History
Football, the national sport in Paraguay, was introduced to Paraguay at the end of the 19th century by the Dutch immigrant William Paats. While at first he taught sport only at a school in Asunción, it gradually became more and more popular. In 1902 Paats founded the first Paraguayan football club, Club Olimpia. On 25 November 1903, Olimpia and Club Guaraní played the first match between two Paraguayan clubs.
On 18 June 1906, the two clubs, together with Club Libertad, Club General Díaz and Club Nacional, founded the League Paraguaya de Fútbol, the forerunner of today’s association, the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol. The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol immediately organised the country’s first football championship, which, according to a newspaper, was held as Copa el Diario until 1916. The first match took place on 8 July 1906 between Guaraní and Olimpia and ended 1-1. At the end of the first season, Guaraní was Paraguay’s first champion. In the game for second place, Olimpia prevailed against Libertad. In 1908 and 1922, a coup d’état and a civil war prevented the championship from taking place. After the competition was suspended from 1932 to 1934 because of the Chaco War, the championship was resumed in 1935 as a professional competition.
In 1910, a second league, the Copa Intendencia Municipal, was established, the first champion of which became Club Sol de América and was promoted to the first league, replacing Club Mbiguá. A third league also existed, but only youth teams played in it.
In 1911, a league of renegade teams was established, the Liga Centenario, which from 1916 was known as Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol (not to be confused with the later name of the national association).

The mode of the league changed several times over the years. In a few years a final was held between the best two teams for the championship. In the 1950s, the championship was divided into two rounds, after which the best teams played the title in another competition. The Apertura and Clausura modes were introduced in 2008. Apertura 2009 was the 100th tournament in the history of the Paraguayan Football League.
So far, 8 different teams have won the Paraguay Football Championship. With 40 championships, Olimpia is by far the most successful team in the country. They are followed by Cerro Porteño with 31 titles and Libertad with 19 championships. So far, only one team from a city other than the capital Asunción has won the national title, Presidente Hayes from the city of the same name in 1952. Internationally, Olimpia is the only Paraguayan club to have won the title. These include the 1979 World Cup and 3 wins in the Copa Libertadores (1979, 1990, 2002).
Mode
12 teams participate in the league. The season usually runs from February to December. The matches take place on Saturdays and Sundays, in some weeks also on Wednesdays.
The Paraguay championship is played in Apertura and Clausura modes. The Apertura takes place from February to June or July, the Clausura starts in July and ends in December. Both competitions have their own title, so that there are two Paraguayan football champions during one calendar year.
The two teams that have scored the least points on average in the last three years are relegated and replaced by the champions and runners-up of the second division (División Intermedia).
International
Paraguay will receive six international places, three for the Copa Libertadores and three for the Copa Sudamericana. The two Apertura and Clausura champions will automatically take part in the Copa Libertadores. The tables of Apertura and Clausura will be aggregated to determine the other places eligible for participation in the international competitions. The team that has scored the most points alongside the two champions will take third place in the Copa Libertadores. If a team wins both Apertura and Clausura, the third best team will also take part in the Copa Libertadores. The first place in the Copa Sudamericana is awarded to the best champion in the aggregated standings. As a result, a Paraguayan team will be playing in both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana in one season. The other two places for the Copa Sudamericana go to the remaining two best teams who have not yet been assigned an international spot. International matches are played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
