The Elite Series is the highest league in Norwegian football. In the regulations of the Norwegian Football Association, the league is referred to as 0. divisjon, whose name is determined annually by the association. The current official name is Eliteserien. From 1990 to 2016 the league was called Tippeligaen (Wettliga) after its then sponsor, the betting company Norsk Tipping. From 1963 to 1990, the top division was Divisjon 1. This name was later used for the second highest class, which was called Adeccoligaen from 2005 to 2013 and will be called OBOS-Ligaen from 2015 (both names also after a sponsor). From 1948 to 1962 the league was called Hovedserien, and before that Norgesserien (“Norwegian league”).
Rules
The Norwegian top league consists of 16 teams (since 2009). From March to November of each year, the Norwegian champions are determined in 30 matches (one home match and one away match).
The two clubs at the end of the table are relegated to the Adecco League. The third-last club plays relegation matches against the winner of the Adecco League qualifying tournament.
In the 2009 and 2010 season, the third relegated or promoted player was determined in a final round with semi-finals and finals: The third last club of the elite series will play at home against the fifth placed team of the 1st Divisjon in a first semi-final to stay in the elite series. At the same time the third placed team (home team) and the fourth placed team of the 1st Divisjon determine another participant for the second round (there is only one game each). In the second round (final), the two winners play against each other in the first and second legs. The winner is a participant in the elite series in the next season. In the season 2011 the qualification tournament was abolished.
Qualification for European club competitions
Placement in the UEFA five-year ranking (previous year’s ranking in brackets). The abbreviations CL and EL after the country coefficients indicate the number of representatives in the 2018/19 season of the Champions League and the Europa League respectively.
Status: End of European cup season 2017/18
In the 2013 UEFA five-year standings, the Norwegian league is in 26th place, marking the start of the Norwegian champions’ second qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League. The team in second place and the cup winner in the second round of the Europa League qualifiers will also start. The club in third place must enter the competition in the first round. If the cup winner has already qualified via the elite series, the right to participate is transferred to the opponent in the final and then to the fourth of the championship.
