First League is the highest category of Nicaraguan football. It is currently organized by the Nicaraguan Association of Football Clubs (ANCF).
In Nicaragua the history of football, orderly, with regulations began in 1907. One of its forerunners was professor Napoleón Parrales Bendaña, who while studying in Costa Rica obtained his first knowledge of the sport. On his return to Diriamba, his hometown, with the sole objective of promoting the practice of football, he shared his knowledge and passion with the youth of Diriambina.
Also, it is emphasized the contribution of other coterráneos of Parrales Bendaña who that same year returned of their studies in Europe, those that were caught by this sport, and that when returning to the country united their efforts giving themselves to the task of teaching to children and young people the technique of playing the soccer, all belonged to the following families: Rappaccioli, Baltodano, Briceño and González (known as Palmereños). They made available to those interested all the soccer sports materials they had brought: balls, regulations and documents on soccer techniques.
The first sites used as training centres were the fields of “San Vicente”, “Los Cocos” and “La Salle”. By 1908, Parrales Bendaña founded the organization “Sociedad de Ahorro”, whose purpose was to raise funds for the promotion and practice of football.
Historic milestones
In 1911 the “Atlético” and “Colón” teams were founded in Managua, whose trajectories were ephemeral. The first national team to be founded and still in force is Diriangén Fútbol Club, which was born on 15 May 1917. Another important milestone was the foundation of the “Comisión Nacional de Deportes”, on November 3, 1931, which created the “Secretaría General de Fútbol”, its first designated general secretary was Thomas Cranshaw, with Carlos Pacheco Rodríguez as assistant secretary.
In 1933, the first tournament of the national football championship was organized with the participation of four teams:
- Alas, from Managua.
- Sporting Club, from Corinto.
- Metropolitano, from León.
- Diriangén, from Diriamba.
The team Alas, from Managua, directed by Arturo Angarita Núñez, won the championship. In 1941, Eduardo Kosovic (“Edy”), of Hungarian nationality, arrived in the country. He was the first foreign coach of Nicaraguan football. He coached the teams of the capital in the morning and the teams of Diriambinos in the afternoon. He was also in charge of the preparation of the National Team that participated in the first Central American and Caribbean Championship held in San José, Costa Rica, that same year. At the Congress held in Rio de Janeiro on June 22 and 23, 1950, by the Secretary of the National Sports Commission, Mr. José Benito Ramírez, Nicaragua was accepted as an affiliated member of FIFA.
- In 1958, the Nicaraguan Football Federation (FENIFUT) was founded.
- In 1964, FIFA recognised Juan Mercado, Rodolfo Navarro, Honorato Molina and José Urtecho as International Referees.
- In 1967 the onceno Flor de Caña officially debuts in the CONCACAF tournaments.
- In 1970 José Urtecho directed as central referee the game between Mexico and the United States. Rodolfo Navarro participates as central referee in the game between Honduras and the United States.
- In 1971 Nicaragua participates for the first time in the World Cup qualifiers for the 1974 World Cup in Germany, facing El Salvador in roundtrip matches, losing both challenges.
- In 1988, Walter Ferretti Fonseca, Brigade Commander and Guerrilla Commander, president of FENIFUT, died in a traffic accident. In his honor, the football team supported by the National Police is renamed Club Deportivo Walter Ferretti.
At the international level
The first major victory at the senior national team level occurred during the qualifying rounds for the Central American Championship held in El Salvador in 1965, Nicaragua defeated Honduras 2-0.1
At the Central American level, a national team’s best performance came in 1973, at the first Central American Games held in Guatemala, where the gold medal was played against Panama, losing 2-0.1.
Competition system
The football year is divided into two tournaments: Opening and Closing.
The competition system is as follows:
Opening and Closing Tournaments are played with a Regular Phase of two rounds, All Against All for a total of 18 games. The top four teams qualify for a “Little League” where they again play All Against All on reciprocal visits for a total of 6 games. The Final (Roundtrip) is between the Best Ranked team in the Regular Round and the Best Team in the Little League. In case of being the same leader in both phases, he is automatically Champion of the tournament.
National Champion will be the one who wins both tournaments. And if there are different champions, the one that has more points in the Regular Phases of both. The Scorer Leader will be the one who adds more goals in the 36 games of the Regular Phases of the two tournaments; the goals that are scored in the 16 matches of the Leagues and Finals of the two tournaments will not be counted.
Direct Descent the team that occupies the Last position in the global table of the regular seasons (after 36 Days) automatically descends to the lower category. Promotion there are two matches (Roundtrip) between the team that occupies the penultimate place in the overall table of regular seasons and the Second Division runner-up. The winning team is the one who is promoted or promoted to play in the First Division and the losing team will play in the Second Division.
International Competitions
The team that in the Regular phases adds more points and wins the Opening and/or Closing Tournament will qualify the Concacaf Champions League as NCA. Previously, the two best teams qualified for the extinct UNCAF Interclub Cup. To date, Diriangen Futbol Club, Deportivo Santa Cecilia and Real Estelí have been the only teams to qualify for the UNCAF Interclub Cup, with Real Esteli and Walter Ferretti being the teams to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.
