The Eredivisie is the highest football league of the Dutch Football Association Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond (KNVB). It was founded in 1956.
The Eredivisie currently has 18 teams playing against each other on 34 match days during the annual season. For decades, the battle for the Dutch football championship was dominated by the three largest and financially strong Dutch clubs Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord Rotterdam. In recent years, however, AZ Alkmaar (2008/09 season) and Twente Enschede (2009/10 season) have also celebrated championships.
UEFA five-year standings
Placement in the UEFA five-year ranking (previous year’s ranking in brackets). The abbreviations CL and EL after the country coefficients indicate the number of representatives in the 2018/19 season of the Champions League and the Europa League respectively.
In UEFA’s 5-year ranking, which regulates the starting and qualifying positions for European competitions, the honorary division is currently ranked eighth. The “Eredivisie” will have a direct starting place and a place for qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. There will also be three qualifying slots for the UEFA Europa League. The winner of the KNVB Cup, which will be played in parallel with the Honorary Division, will also receive a place in the Europa League.
With a reform of the Eredivisie that came into force in the 2005/06 season, play-off matches will take place after a season has ended. After the Champions League participants were initially determined in these games, only the clubs ranked five to eight in the final table have taken part in the playoffs since the 2008/09 season. A place in the Europa League will be played between them. All playoffs will be played with outward and return legs.
Criticism of the playoff mode
The playoff mode, which is unique in Europe’s football leagues, has been and is being discussed controversially in the Netherlands as well as internationally. Critics say that the mode leads to a devaluation of the regular seasonal operations and that clubs that have excelled in the season through good performance could be deprived of the fruits of their labour in a single game.
A prime example, in the eyes of the critics, was the play-off match between AZ Alkmaar and FC Groningen in the first season after the introduction of the new mode. Vice champion AZ Alkmaar had distanced fifth place Groningen by 18 points in the regular season. After a long season in which Alkmaar had to play considerably more competitive games than Groningen through the Cup and UEFA Cup, the AZ lacked the necessary strength in the play-off. Groningen won the first and second leg 3-1 and 1-2.
In 2007/08, the same could also be observed when runners-up Ajax Amsterdam failed 1:2 and 0:0 in the Champions League play-offs against Twente Enschede (4th place). The capital city players were thus forced to remain in the UEFA Cup.
Reflegation
The relegation mode was also changed in the course of the playoff reform. Only the last one in the table descends directly. The teams in 16th and 17th place will play relegation matches against teams in the 2nd Dutch league, the Eerste Divisie.
Spectator numbers
In the regular 2017/18 season, the average number of spectators per match was 19,001, making Eredivisie one of the world’s most watched football leagues. The highest average ratings were recorded by Ajax Amsterdam (49,670) and Feyenoord Rotterdam (45,588).
