The Moroccan football league also known as GNF 1 and known as Botola Pro or Botola Maroc Telecom for sponsorship reasons,1 is the top football club competition in Morocco, is held since 1956, months after the country gained its independence from Spain and France, the tournament is organized by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
History
Football in Morocco has its origins in the League of Morocco in 1916, a tournament organized by the French Football Federation during the French occupation of Morocco. The Moroccan league together with the Algiers league, the Oran league and the Constantine league in Algeria, and the Tunis league, formed the Union of North African football leagues which were inserted in lower categories of French football.
After the independence of Morocco in 1956 the tournament ceased to be played, giving way to the dispute of the Moroccan Football Championship (GNF) and organized by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation founded in 1955.
USM Casablanca were the most successful team in this period winning the title 16 times, followed by Olympique Marocain with 8 victories and Wydad Casablanca who won five titles.
Form
The Moroccan league is played by 16 teams, the champion and runners-up qualify for the CAF Champions League, while the third and the Throne Cup champions qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. The last two finishers will be relegated to the Moroccan Second Division at the end of the season.
