The Aleph League is Israel’s third largest football league and is organised by the Israel Football Association.
History
It was created in 1949 just one year after Israel’s independence as the highest category of football in the country, but financial and security problems caused the league to be suspended just one year after its foundation, although it was resumed in 1951, was not played in 1952 and was played in 1953.
The following season saw the emergence of the Leumit League, which became Israel’s top flight, leaving the Alef League as the second tier in 1954. A new restructuring in Israeli football gave rise to the Artzit League as the new second division, making the Alef League the third level.
In 1999 the Ligat ha’Al was born as the new first division, causing the Alef League to go down again and be the fourth category, but in the 2008/09 season the Ligat ha’Al merged with the Artzit League and the Leumit League was expanded to 16 teams, bringing as a consequence that the Alef League returns to be again the third division.
Format
The league is divided into two groups: North and South, but because the north is well populated and the south is practically a desert, the teams from the cities of Haifa and Tel-Aviv have to play in the South group, although they are from the north because of the small number of teams located in Southern Israel.
Each group is made up of 16 teams, all of which face each other on a reciprocal visit, playing a total of 30 games in which the winner of each group is promoted to the Leumit League, and the teams between the 2nd and 5th places play a play-off to define the other two teams promoted to the second category, while the last two places in each group are relegated to the Bet League, and those in the 14th place play a play-off with the third places in the Bet League to see if they retain the category or relegate.
