Alpha Ethniki is the highest football league in Greece. Since the 2006/07 season it is officially called Superleague Ellada. Currently 16 teams are playing in the league. At the end of the season, the two last placed teams are relegated to the second Greek league, the Football League (Beta Ethniki until 2010), and are replaced by the two best second league teams.
The following regulations apply to the European Cup competitions from the 2010/11 season onwards: The Greek champions are directly qualified for the group phase of the Champions League. The winner of the playoffs (see below) will enter the third and final qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The Greek Cup winner and the second-placed team from the playoffs are qualified for the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round. The third-placed team from the national playoffs will enter the 2nd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
The history
Football first appeared in Greece in 1894. After the first Olympic Games of modern times (1896) many Greek clubs founded the first football departments. Until 1922, SEGAS, the association of Greek sports bodies, was responsible for Greek football. The first attempts were made to hold an all-Greek championship. It was to succeed for the first time in 1906, but only three clubs participated: Ethnikos Athinon, Panellinios and Piraikos. From then on, the championship was played out annually among teams from Attica.
Season Champion
- 1905/06 Ethnicos Athinon
- 1906/07 Ethnicos Athinon
- 1907/08 Goudi
- 1908/09 Piraikos Syndesmos
- 1909/10 Goudi
- 1910/11 Panathinaikos Athens
- 1911/12 Goudi
The second attempt
The last championship was held in 1912. This was followed by the turmoil of the First Balkan War and the First World War. In the 1922/23 season a new attempt was made. A new association, the Association of Football Associations EPSE, was founded. For the first time, teams from Thessaloniki should also participate. Large organizational (not existing infrastructure) and financial (the players simply could not afford to be absent for several days) difficulties prevented however the regular execution. There was a deciding match between the clubs Piräikos Syndesmos and Aris Saloniki (Piräikos won 3:1). The newly founded association was dissolved in the same year.
On 14 November 1926, the present Greek Football Association, EPO, was founded. The first championship was held in the 1927/28 season. The three big clubs (Olympiakos Piraeus, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens) stayed away from the first championship because of differences with the football association. At first only teams from Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus played the Greek championship among themselves, followed in the season 1953/54 the first teams from the “province”: Panachaiki (Achaia) and Niki Volou (Thessaly) played for the championship.
In the 1959/60 season, the first Greek league, the Alpha Ethniki, is created. The first professional championship is held in the 1979/80 season.

The Play-offs
The teams that will be in places two to five at the end of the current Super League season will play in the so-called “play-offs”, a mini elimination tournament for the European starting places. The fifth player enters the playoff round with zero points, the other three participants (2., 3. and 4.) each with one fifth of the points lead to the 5th place of the season-end table; fractions are rounded up or down to the nearest natural number. The winner of the playoffs is guaranteed participation in the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The runners-up will qualify for the third UEFA Europa League qualifying round and the runners-up will compete in qualifying round two of the UEFA Europa League.
