The Regionalliga Bayern (Bavarian Regional League) is one of the 5 leagues that make up the Regionalliga, the fourth level of German football.
History
It was founded at the end of the 2011/12 season to replace the Regionalliga Süd and is composed mainly of teams from the Region of Bavaria by the adjustment made by the Regionalliga in 2011.
The reasons for the reform were mainly due to the insolvency caused by the infrastructure requirements of the fourth level, which made the costs very high, and the disadvantages that the teams had on the little interest they had on television rights, as it was not very flashy to broadcast games of the fourth level. Among the requirements were that the stadiums should have a minimum capacity of 1000 spectators, that the fans of the visiting team should have a separate entrance to the stadium, causing financial problems, especially for amateur teams.
For this reason some teams that won the Oberliga declined to participate in the Regionalliga due to the financial risk it represented, breaking with a basic principle of German football: Lower division champions always ascend.
In October 2010, 223 out of 253 delegates voted in favour of the reform of the Regionalliga, increasing it from 3 to 5, re-establishing the Regionalliga Nordost, creating the Regionalliga Bayern and transforming the Regionalliga Süd into the Regionalliga Südwest.
In March 2012 it was decided that the champion of the Regionalliga Bayern, apart from fighting for the promotion to the League, also got a place to play in the first round of the German Cup, also giving that prize to teams reserve.
The first match of the Bayern Regionalliga was played on July 19, 2012 between FC Eintracht Bamberg and SpVgg Bayern Hof in the city of Bamberg, with victory for the locals of 1-0, being Alexander Deptalla the first scorer in the Bayern Regionalliga.
