The Oberliga Niederrhein (until 2008 Verbandsliga Niederrhein, until 2012 Niederrheinliga) is the highest league in the Football Association Niederrhein and currently the fifth highest league in the German league system.
History
The league was founded in 1956 with 16 clubs as the highest league of the Lower Rhine Football Association. Previously, the state leagues that still exist today under the Verbandsliga were the highest leagues of the association. At the time of its introduction, the Verbandsliga Niederrhein was the third highest German football class. With the introduction of the Oberliga Nordrhein and the Regionalliga West/Südwest, the Verbandsliga Niederrhein became the fourth highest league in 1978 and the fifth highest league in 1994. In the course of the restructuring of the league system in Germany in 2008 and the associated introduction of the 3rd Soccer League, it only represented the sixth highest league from the 2008/09 season onwards. The champion of the Niederrheinliga was directly qualified for the next higher NRW league. The three last placed teams relegated to the three-track Landesliga Niederrhein.
In the course of the regional league reform in 2012, the six-class-association league level again became the fifth-class-top league from the 2012/13 season onwards. Together with the new Mittelrheinliga and the reintroduced Oberliga Westfalen, Oberliga Niederrhein has since formed the substructure to the geographically smaller Regionalliga West and thus partially replaced the dissolved NRW-League.
As a result of the reform, there were some changes in the 2011/12 season. The 13 top-ranked clubs qualified directly for the fifth division Niederrhein, as did the champions of the three Landesliga relay teams. The champions of the Niederrheinliga qualified for the Regionalliga West in relegation matches against one of the clubs of the NRW-Liga ranked 4th to 7th. FC Kray, who won against the favoured KFC Uerdingen, managed to do this and was promoted from the sixth to the fourth highest division. Due to the performance of the FVN clubs in the NRW league and the participation waiver of the 1st FC Viersen, the tables 14th and 15th were allowed to move up to the upper league Niederrhein. The clubs in places 16 to 18, on the other hand, relegated to the Landesliga.

VfB Homberg, 1. FC Union Solingen and KFC Uerdingen 05 are record champions of the Verbandsliga Niederrhein with four titles each. Homberg’s successes are taken into account for Homberg SV, Union Ohligs’ and SG Union Solingen’s successes for Solingen. In the case of Uerdingen, the title of the club Bayer 05 Uerdingen, from which the football department once split off, is also counted.
