The Hessenliga (until 2008 Oberliga Hessen) is today one of the fourteen German Oberliga, which form the fifth highest league in the league system in Germany.
It is organised by the Hessian Football Association. The next highest league is the Regionalliga.
The Hessenliga has 17 starting places. The champion of the Hessenliga is promoted to the Regionalliga Südwest. The runner-up plays promotion matches against the second placed teams of the upper leagues of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate/Saar. The three last placed teams at the end of the season will relegate to the Hessian association leagues. The champions of these three leagues are promoted to the Hessenliga.
History
After the Second World War, football operations were resumed in Hesse in the 1945/46 season. Below the new Oberliga Süd, which consisted of Hessen Eintracht Frankfurt, Kickers Offenbach and FSV Frankfurt, four leagues were formed. In addition to the Landesliga with a West- and an Ost-Staffel, a Kurhessen-Liga and a Main-Liga were established. For the following season 1946/47, the league structure was unified and a Landesliga Hessen was formed, which was divided into five groups in the 1946/47 season.
In the 1947/48 season, a single-track state league was formed from the best teams of these five groups. Borussia Fulda, SV Darmstadt 98, Eintracht Wetzlar, KSV Hessen Kassel, 1. Rödelheimer FC, Germania Bieber, SG Arheilgen, VfL Kassel, VfB 06 Großauheim, CSC 03 Kassel, SG Kassel-Nord, FV Horas, VfB Friedberg and TuS Löhnberg belonged to this first league. The first championship was won by FC Rödelheim. The Landesliga Hessen represented the second highest level in the German league system in Hessen from 1945 to 1950.
From the 1950/51 season onwards, the Hessenliga, after the introduction of the 2nd League South, was only the third highest league in Germany as the 1st Amateurliga Hessen. The next reform took place in 1965. The 1st Amateurliga Hessen was renamed now for the first time in Hessenliga and introduced as new “substructure” the group leagues instead of the 2nd Amateurliga. From 1978 the Hessenliga was called Oberliga Hessen, the lower level Landesliga. Until the foundation of the third-class regional league in 1994, the Hessian Oberliga formed the third level of the league system. Afterwards it was located on the fourth level until the introduction of the 3rd league in 2008, since then it has been in fifth class.
Until the 2004/05 season, the league was called FFH-Oberliga Hessen for two years. In the 2005/06 season the league was called Oddset-Oberliga Hessen. In the following two years the league returned to the name Oberliga Hessen before being renamed Hessenliga in 2008. Since the 2015/16 season, the league has been called Lotto Hessenliga.
