The Veikkausliiga is the highest league in Finnish football. It determines the Finnish champion.

Mode

The league comprises twelve teams. Each team plays against each other three times during the season. The top of the league is the champion and takes part in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. If two teams are level on points at the top of the table at the end of the season, these two teams will play the champion in the first and second legs. The last team to finish the season is relegated to the Ykkönen (first division).

As is usual in the Scandinavian countries, football is also played in Finland in the summer. The season begins in April or May and ends in October. The Veikkausliiga is in the shadow of the Finnish ice hockey league in terms of media and spectator interest. On average, about 3,000 spectators watch the games of the Veikkausliiga.

In 1908 the Finnish champion was determined for the first time. The championship at that time was played in cup mode, Unitas Helsinki won his only championship title with a 4:1 final victory over PUS Helsinki. In 1914 the championship had to be suspended for the first time because of the First World War, but was resumed in the following year.

Introduction of a league

In 1930 the Mestaruussarja, which is also known as SM-sarja, introduced the championship in league mode. It consisted of eight teams. Each team played once against the competition. After seven games HIFK Helsinki and Turku PS were equal on points, so that the champion had to be determined in a deciding match. In this match HIFK won with 4:1.

The founding members 1930

  • Helsingfors IFK
  • HPS Helsinki
  • Kronohagen IF
  • IF Stjärnan
  • Åbo IFK
  • Turku PS
  • Vaasan PS
  • ViPS Viipuri

In 1932, second legs were introduced so that each team had to play against the other teams in a home match and an away match. Therefore, 14 match days were necessary to determine the champion.

Turbulence in the war

In 1939 the championship was cancelled shortly before the end of the season due to the Second World War. The championship leader Turku PS was declared champion. In the following season, the championship was played in cup mode as in the early days. 1940/41 was again played in league form, but again had to be broken off shortly before the end of the season because of the war. Again TPS profited from the decision. 1942 was played again in the cup mode, 1943 no championship aligned.

Directly after the war the championship was played out in a competition of the Finnish federation and the workers’ sports federation. The winners played the Finnish champion. Individual clubs had to move their homes, as parts of Finland were annexed by the Soviet Union.

Recreation of the league

In 1948 the two competitions were united, so that the championship was held in a league with 16 teams. In the following two years the number of teams was reduced. First to twelve, then to ten clubs.

In 1960 the number was increased again to twelve teams, before it was temporarily increased to 14 clubs in the 1971 season. In the following season again twelve teams were first-class. Between 1979 and 1989, after the end of the regular season, there were play-off matches for the championship title or a final round in league form.

Veikkausliiga

Until 1989, the championship was played in a league run by the Finnish Football Association. In 1990 the Veikkausliiga was founded as an independent championship. The main sponsor of the league is the state betting provider Veikkaus. In the first season, championship play-offs were played. Starting in 1991, the twelve first division teams competed against each other in three games, so that each team had to play 33 season games. At the same time, the 3-point rule for victory was introduced.

In 1993, a championship round was played at the end of the regular season. A relegation round ran parallel with the four worst teams of the first league and the four best placed teams of the second league. The championship was increased to 14 teams, which was reversed two years later. Since 2003, 14 teams are again represented in the first league.

In 2006 the championship had to be played with only 13 teams due to the insolvency of Allianssi Vantaa.
