The Finnish First Division (in Finnish, Pääsarjassa Liiga) is the highest category of professional football league in Finland. For reasons of sponsorship of the state lottery Veikkaus, the current name of the league is Veikkausliiga (in Swedish, Tipsligan).
The championship was created in 1990 to replace the previous tournament, the Mestaruussarja, which played amateur and semi-professional teams. As in other countries with cold climates, such as Norway or Iceland, the Finnish league is played in the spring and summer months. The league format is similar to other European championships.
History
The current Finnish Premier League was born in the 1990s, but it was not the country’s first league competition. From 1908 to 1929, the national champion emerged from a knockout tournament similar to the current Finnish Cup, and in 1930 the country’s first league, the Mestaruussarja, was created. It had eight participants in its debut and the first winner was Helsinki’s HIFK multi-sport club. For most of its history, the Finnish league was an amateur tournament, with only a few players becoming professionals.
In 1990, the first edition of the SM-liiga was held, with 12 participants and a professionalized structure that sought to improve the level of Finnish football. In its first editions, players such as Jari Litmanen, Antti Niemi, Sami Hyypiä or Jussi Jääskeläinen emerged and made the leap into international football. Over time, the number of participants has grown to 14 clubs (2003-2010).
Format
The Football League System in Finland has several divisions, and the Veikkausliiga is the highest level. It is made up of 12 teams in a regular league, playing each other in three rounds, back and forth. At the end of the championship, each club will have played 33 matches. The six best teams of the previous season play 17 games at home, the rest play 16 of the 33 league games at home. The tournament begins in April and ends in October, so most of the time in summer. It is played under FIFA rules with a scoring system of 3 points per victory, 1 per draw and none in case of defeat.
The club with the most points at the end of the league will be crowned champion and has the right to play in the UEFA Champions League, starting from the second qualifying round. The second will play the UEFA Europa League from the second preliminary round, just like the Finnish Cup winner, while the third will also qualify and start from the first round. The latter goes straight down to the second tier, known as Ykkönen, and is replaced by the latter’s champion.
