The FIFA U-17 World Cup, or U17 World Cup for short, is a football tournament for young men under the age of 17 organised by the FIFA World Football Association. The first U-17 World Cup took place in China in 1985. The Nigerian U-17 national team won the tournament. The tournament has been held every two years since then and the age limit was raised from 16 to 17 in 1991.
Record world champion of the U-17 is Nigeria with five wins. A second African football nation was also very successful: Ghana won the tournament twice. The eleventh FIFA U-17 World Cup took place in Peru in 2005. 16 teams played for the World Cup title. Mexico won for the first time with a 3-0 win over Brazil. This tournament was the first international competition in which FIFA used a microchip in the ball. The stadiums had to be equipped with special technology to receive the signal. The U-17 World Cup was considered a dress rehearsal for this technical innovation at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where the chip in the ball, which indicates whether the ball has crossed the goal line or not, was to be introduced. However, as the system was not yet working properly, FIFA rejected the plan and postponed the launch.
The 2007 U-17 World Cup in South Korea saw 24 teams compete for the first time. The six best teams from Europe qualify for the U-17 European Football Championship in the early summer of that year.
The last U-17 World Cup was held in Chile from 17 October to 8 November 2015. Nigeria defended the title. Nigeria’s U-17 players defeated Mali 2-0 in the final, making it their fifth title for the record winners. However, it was suspected earlier that Nigeria had used much older players, in one case a 25-year-old player. Nigeria were not admitted to the 2017 U17 World Cup in India because 26 players from the squad failed the medical age test.
So far, only one player could become both U-17 World Champion and World Senior Champion: The Brazilian Ronaldinho, who became U-17 world champion in 1997 and world champion with the senior national team in 2002.
