The Danish Superliga (in Danish, Superligaen) is the highest category of professional football in Denmark. The competition is organised by the Danish Football Union (Dansk Boldspil Union or DBU). The teams taking part in the tournament are fourteen, with two of them descending. In recent years, the Danish league has experienced great growth, with new stadiums and more fans, which has elevated it to 12th place in UEFA’s top league ranking.1 The season runs from July to May, with teams playing 33 games each for a total of 198 games in the season.
The team with the most league championships is FC Copenhagen with twelve titles.
History
The championship was founded in 1991 and replaced the Danish First Division as the highest football championship in Denmark. In 1991, two seasons were played, one of transition (held in spring 1991) which began with 10 teams and from which Brondby IF won, and another (1991-92) which would have two phases: a regular championship with 10 teams during the autumn and a final phase with the first 8 teams in spring. Lyngby BK emerged victorious.
The current regular league system was established from the 1995-96 season, as well as an increase to 14 teams, which would play each other 3 rounds.
Structure
The championship has 14 teams playing a regular league. Each team confronts each other on 3 occasions: in the first 2 rounds there are home and away matches, while for the third match the field is established depending on how it was in the previous season. The 2 teams with the fewest points are relegated to the Danish First Division.
For the 2015/16 cycle, Denmark has 1 place for the UEFA Champions League and 3 for the UEFA Europa League. The league champion has the right to play the UEFA Champions League, starting from the second qualifying round. The Danish Cup winners play the UEFA Europa League from the second round, and the second and third places in the league play the UEFA Europa League from the first round.
