The Croatian Cup is the second most important tournament of the Croatian football championship after the Prva HNL. It is assigned by the Croatian Football Federation.

Formula

This tournament has always been a knockout match. In the first “experimental” edition, that of 1992 there were only 7 teams (which were the Croatian teams that would have the right to participate in the Yugoslavia Cup of the same year). From 1992-93 to 1997-98 the competition was open to 32 teams; from the 1998-99 season they became 48, admitted according to various criteria. The first sixteen teams with the highest coefficient, linked to the progress of the Cup during the last five years, are automatically admitted. Twenty-one teams that won the Županijski kup (regional cups) are admitted, along with eleven regional finalists from the Županijski kups with the largest number of participants.

The teams from the regional tournaments compete against each other in a dry match in the preliminary round, with the first sixteen teams with the best coefficient coming into the picture from the sixteenth finals (the commonalities of this round are decided by the ranking: 32nd-1st, 31st-2nd, 30th-3rd, etc.). The semi-final is played in a round-trip match. The top 16 teams are announced two years in advance and are exempted from participating in the regional cup the following season.

If one or more of the top 16 teams in the ranking go bankrupt and loose, such as Varaždin and Karlovac in 2012-13, they are not replaced and their opponents from the preliminary round (respectively Libertas Novska and Zelina) pass the round without injury.

Finally, it should be remembered that during the Second World War, in 1941, a similar event was played organized by the Independent State of Croatia, with the final victory of Građanski Zagreb.

The ranking

The five-year ranking is calculated as follows: 32 points a.s.l. for the cup victory, 16 points a.s.l. for the final, 8 points a.s.l. for the semifinals, 4 points a.s.l. for the quarters, 2 points a.s.l. for the eighth and 1 point a.s.l. for the sixteenth. All these points must be added together, so the cup victory brings 63 points (1+2+4+8+16+32), the finalist 31 (1-2-4-8-16), the semi-finalists 15 (1+2+4+8), for those eliminated at the quarterfinals 7 (1+2+4), for those eliminated at the round of 16 3 (1+2) and 1 point for those eliminated at the sixteenth.

For the calculation of the ranking, we observe in order:

  • The points given by the various rankings
  • The championship played by the team
  • Last place in the championship
