The First Category B, officially called the Eagle Tournament for commercial reasons, is the second most important tournament after the First Category A and belongs to the Major Division of Colombian Football (Dimayor), an entity dependent on the Colombian Football Federation. The tournament is of professional character, it began to be disputed in 1991, the first tournament was won by the Envigado Fútbol Club and the current champion is the Cúcuta Deportivo.
History
The first precedent of a second division championship in Colombian football dates back to 1962 when the Amateur Football Federation (Fedebol) was liquidated, leaving several teams wandering, which led to the Board of Directors of the Major Division of Colombian Football (Dimayor), promoted the organization of the “B” Division of Colombian football to incorporate the teams Once de Noviembre (Cartagena), Deportivo Atlántico (Barranquilla), Deportivo Barranca (Barrancabermeja), Municipio de Tuluá, Boca Juniors de Cali (now based in Palmira) and Javeriano (Pasto).
However, the Colombian Football Association (Adefútbol), which had the greatest control of Colombian football and FIFA recognition, opposed this important initiative.
After 4 years, in 1966 this initial idea was put into effect, organizing a so-called “Special Tournament”, with several drawbacks in its start, but fortunately did not have repercussions on the smooth development of the tournament.
Eight amateur clubs participated: Deportivo Girardot, Deportivo Robledo de Cartago, Sulfácidos, Disrepuestos, Distriobras Palmira, Adenorte and the national team of the department of Huila, all of them from cities that did not have a first division team. In addition, the reserves of twelve of the fourteen teams of the First Division participated. The team of reserves of America of Cali was crowned champion and runner-up the reserves of Millionaires.
For 1968 a second similar version is carried out, this time the “Tournament of Second Category”, which was approved on September 20, 1967, with the participation of eight clubs, all of them amateurs and exclusively of cities that did not have equipment in first division.
This tournament began on September 21, 1968 and spanned fourteen dates, crowned champion Buga Youth and runner-up Deportivo Huila. Also participating were Juventud Girardot, Deportivo Tuluá, Deportes Cartago, Atlético Barranca, Unión Sogamoso and Atlético Palmira.
From 1978 to 1981 the National Reserve Tournament was held, which also had no continuity, and just as with the desire to hold a second division tournament, the Dimayor was not successful in the decades following these precedents.
Beginning of the Primera B category
Finally in 1991, the Dimayor thanks to the support of the private company Concasa, decided to organize the championship Category First B. The first team to be promoted was Envigado Fútbol Club, which from 1992 became part of the First Category A tournament.
One of the greatest impacts of the Colombian First B is the possibility that is given to the football of province to be able to participate in the professional level and to promote so much the regions as the players of those parts.
In 1991 10 teams started the First B, the following year there were 12, in 1993 there were 14 until 1996 where there were 16 teams, at the same time as in the First Division. In 2002, due to the economic crisis, the number was reduced to 14, but in 2003 it rose to 17, in 2004 there were 18 participating teams, in 2015 the First Division was established with 20 teams and the First B with 16.
The champion of each annual season ascends directly to the First A of Colombian professional soccer, and starting in 2006, the runner-up of the year plays a series promotional match with the penultimate of the table of relegation of the First Division, to add another team to the possible promotion, although this match was eliminated in 2015 by passing the First A to 20 teams, where there are 2 direct promotions and relegations.
In the Tournament of Promotion there was relegation to the First Category C and later promotion from the third division to the First Category B. From the Primera C category were the teams Deportivo Pasto, Chicó Fútbol Club and La Equidad; these clubs then played in the Primera B category and managed to reach the Primera A category. Samarios, River Plate de Buga, Alianza Llanos and Real Floridablanca were also relegated from Real Cartagena in 1995/96 and Cúcuta Deportivo in 1999, but because they were members of Dimayor and had been in the Primera A category, they did not go down.
Sponsorship
The First B was originally called Copa Concasa, which was the case until 1997, when it was renamed Copa Águila. In 2004 the tobacco company Protabaco began to sponsor the tournament as Premier Cup, which ended in 2009 with the approval of the anti-tobacco law approved by Congress. The law, promoted by Congresswoman Dilian Francisca Toro, initially put the future of the championship on the wobble,910 since Dimayor should soon look for a sponsor due to the fact that the law had immediate effect.11 Subsequently, after the law went through the congressional conciliation commissions, it was agreed to give the Colombian Major Football Division two years to get new sponsors; however, the decision was taken in November 2009.
From 2010 to 2014, Postobón sponsored the first and second division tournaments,12 being the official name and for reasons of sponsorship of the championship, Postobón Tournament in the following five years.
From 2015 the sponsor is the brewery Bavaria S. A. with its product Cerveza Águila so the championship was officially called for reasons of sponsorship Eagle Tournament.
