The A Futbolna Grupa is the highest professional football league in Bulgaria. It is hosted by the Bulgarian Football Association together with the B Grupa, the league under it.

History

The first unofficial football championship was held as early as 1913 and Slawia Sofia won. After the First World War, the competition was held in 1921 under the name Sofia League. In 1924 Bulgaria joined FIFA and a national championship was started immediately. Until 1937 they played in cup mode, to which they returned again between 1941 and 1948.

The Bulgarian Cup was played from the 1937/38 season, but only lasted for four years. It was not until 1980 that this competition was held again on a regular basis. From 1946 to 1991 there was also a trophy of the Soviet Army.

In the summer of 2012, the Bulgarian Football Association decided to reduce the A Grupa to 12 teams. In order to achieve the desired number, four teams will be relegated to the second league in each of the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons and only two will be promoted. In the 2012/13 season, the last four teams to finish the season were relegated, and in the 2013/14 season, a relegation playoff was played in which the teams in 8th to 14th places participate to determine the relegators.

If there is a tie, the direct comparison counts. If this is also the same, then the number of goals scored away from home will count.
