The most important basics of football

The sport of football is a team sport. A total of 22 players compete against each other, 11 in each team. These 11 players consist of a goalkeeper and ten field players. In addition, there are several substitutes available who can be substituted if necessary. However, normally only three substitutions may be made. One of the players in each team is the captain. He has no privileges from this position, but bears some responsibility for his team.

The goal is to have scored more goals than the opponent and thus win the game. A game lasts a total of 90 minutes (divided into two halves, each lasting 45 minutes and interrupted by a fifteen-minute break). The pitch is between 45 and 90 metres wide and between 90 and 120 metres long and is usually grass in the professional area. The goals in football are 2.44 metres high and 7.32 metres wide. In the event of a serious foul, the referee, who is in charge of the game together with two referees, may caution the player with a yellow card. If a player receives a second yellow card, this adds up to a yellow-red card and the player must leave the playing field and the team continues to play outnumbered.

Deeper rules of the sport football

In the case of very gross fouls, the player can be directly punished with a red card. The referee can react to possible delays in play or injury breaks by estimating an extra time of a few minutes in each half. This is at the discretion of the referee. Each team may make three substitutions during the entire match. If a foul is punished in the penalty area, the team whose player has been fouled is awarded a penalty kick, also known as a penalty kick. The penalty kick is taken from eleven metres by one player. A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits an offence brutally, ruthlessly and negligently against an opponent. The reason for this is e.g. jumping, kicking, tackling, kicking, blocking or handball. An indirect free kick occurs when a player plays dangerously, obstructs opponents or otherwise violates the rules.

Start and end of the game

A kick-off takes place at the beginning of the match and after each goal scored. The game begins with the kick-off by two players of a team – each team must be in its own half. The team that has scored more away goals wins after the first and second legs. Otherwise, the game goes into extra time, i.e. it is continued by two half times of 15 minutes each. If still no winner is determined, then a penalty shootout decides. Five penalty kicks are taken per team – if there is still no winner, then the penalty kicks are continued until one team has scored more goals.
