Figure skating is one of the artistic-aesthetic sports. Figure skating involves creating and presenting various artistic elements such as jumps, pirouettes or step passages in a choreography on the ice. Various dance and artistic elements must not be missing. The focus is on the individual disciplines in different places.

Figure skating therefore places very high demands on the training of the body. In addition to the jumps, which above all require strength and coordination, the runner must also be able to move elegantly and gracefully. This requires a very controlled posture and body tension and above all a good balance and mobility on the ice. In order to be able to move the figures as well as possible, a good sense of rhythm is also important. Usually the figures are rehearsed with musical accompaniment and these two components must fit well together.

Disciplines in figure skating

Individual race

The most famous discipline is the single run, divided into men and women. As the name suggests, a single person presents different jumps and elements. The different jumps and pirouettes are connected in form of a choreography with step sequences or dance steps. There are also additional elements like the Arabesque or the Moon.

Pair skating

When running in pairs, the same elements and figures are shown as when running individually, but in pairs. In addition there are a lot of additional figures like throw jumps, lifting figures or the death spiral. When running in pairs, it is not only the correctness of the figures that counts, but also the interplay of the pair. The choreography must be synchronous and the partners must coordinate with each other.

Ice dance

In ice dancing, jumps and pirouettes play a minor role and are even limited in some competition rules. Rather, it is a matter of bringing different dance styles (standard dances, Latin American dances, others) onto the ice. The step sequences are very demanding and often much more difficult than on the floor. Here, too, the aim is to perform as a couple as synchronously as possible and to perform the steps correctly. Ice dancing as a competition discipline only exists in pairs. In ice dancing there are also various lifting figures, but these are also limited in number. The focus is on the combination of dance and music. Although there are no difficult jumps, ice dancing should not be underestimated in its difficulty. The step sequences are very fast and challenging and to realize them on the ice requires a high degree of balance and coordination.

Synchronized Skating (SYS)

SYS is the youngest discipline in figure skating. Here an entire team of runners appears, similar to synchronized swimming. All team members are dressed the same and perform as a unit. There are also other elements associated with SYS than with single or pair running. Sometimes the team runs in a block or in different rows, but also in smaller groups. Therefore, step sequences and synchronicity are an important criterion. The individual members of the team have to be well tuned to each other and find each other well between the figures again and again. The processes have to be coordinated with up to twenty people. Jumps and pirouettes, sometimes even lifting figures also occur at SYS, but rather rarely.

How do I find the right discipline for me?

You don’t have to make this decision immediately if you want to start ice skating. First everyone starts with figure skating to learn the basic elements. Formation skaters and ice dancers can also do basic pirouettes and jumps. Only in the course of an initial training process do you notice whether you prefer to run alone, in pairs or in a team.

Some like jumps very much, others prefer the dance elements. If you decide to run one run at a time, all elements will be perfected and you will reach a higher level of difficulty than the base. Pair runners also mainly improve jumps and pirouettes, but also in pairs. For example, the jumps are trained for synchronicity and the pair must be coordinated with each other. In addition there are specific pair running figures. Ice dancers are less interested in advanced jumps and pirouettes, but more in dances and lifting figures.

Especially runners who don’t like to perform alone are in good hands with the SYS team. SYS is a very good discipline, especially when jumps and pirouettes are not so important. A good running style and a good expression are the most important things here. Many characteristics of an ice skater develop over time. It usually takes several years until you can clearly see where your strengths and weaknesses lie.
