About the origin, distribution, team, field and rules of this complex sport
Cricket is a team sport that is particularly popular in Commonwealth countries. Cricket is one of the most traditional team sports. Its history goes back to the 16th century. is extremely popular. One reason for this is the complex rules of the sport. Cricket is one of the most traditional team sports. Its history goes back to the 16th century.
The origin
This traditional sport has its origins in England. Cricket was first mentioned under the name Kreckett in a court decision in 1597. However, it is assumed that it was played long before.
In the course of the 17th century Cricket found increasing distribution especially in the southeast of England. The game experienced a real upswing after the English monarchy was restored in 1660. Until the turn of the century cricket became one of the most important sports in England. Even high bets were made. In 1697 the press first reported about a cricket match in Sussex.
Due to the colonisation of North America, cricket also reached overseas in the 17th century. It also spread to the Caribbean and India in the early 18th century by the British colonialists. In the further course followed:

The first generally accepted cricket rules, which bore the name Laws of Cricket, were recorded in 1744.
The first international match
The first cricket international was played in 1844 between the USA and Canada in Hoboken, New Jersey. 15 years later, the first North American tour by English professionals took place.
The premiere of the test cricket matches was two matches between an English tour team and teams from Australia in 1877. The County Championship was founded in Great Britain in 1890. The period between 1890 and the 1st World War is still considered the Golden Age of Cricket. Over the years cricket became popular in more and more countries of the British Empire. There was a revolution in playing technique in the 60s when one-day cricket was introduced in England. Although the shorter form of cricket was rejected by the traditionalists, it turned out to be commercially very successful and made the sport popular again among younger people.
In 1975, the first one-day cricket world championship, the Cricket World Cup, was held in England.
Although cricket is a very popular sport in some parts of the world, it is a shadowy existence in countries outside the Commonwealth. In Germany, cricket has been played in organised form since 1888. In the course of time, a Bundesliga in five seasons also emerged.
Curiosities about cricket
- A naked speedster has stormed a cricket field in Sri Lanka for the first time during the game. The incident occurred during a match between Sri Lanka and England at the Sinhalese Club in Colombo. After escaping at first, the “speedster” was later arrested by the police. He was a fan of the English team.
- South African cricket star Morné van Wyk almost fell asleep during a game. The man called “Hammer” dropped the ball during a World Cup match against India or acted in slow motion. As one reporter aptly remarked, he makes a sleepy impression. What he didn’t know was that van Wyk had accidentally thrown in a sleeping pill instead of a vitamin pill before the game. On the pitch, he then had a hard time fighting against sleep. Afterwards the internet was full of jokes and funny comments about the half-sleeping player.
- A tragic incident occurred during a cricket match in Bagladesh. During an amateur match in the Kishoreganj district, the referee killed a teenager. The 15-year-old Nazrul Islam had run onto the pitch and tried to discuss with the referee in anger. He was of the opinion that the impartial had decisively disadvantaged his team. While the two talked to each other, more spectators stormed the square. The referee felt pressed and grabbed a cricket bat. He dealt the 15-year-old a blow to the head. Initially, the injury did not look life-threatening. But then Nazrul Islam collapsed. The blow had caused him to bleed his brain and he died the next day in hospital. The referee is on the run. The police are looking for him.
The Cricket World Cup
Like most other ball sports, Cricket has a world championship. The World One-Day Cricket Championship is the Cricket World Cup, which takes place every four years.
The Cricket World Cup is the most important trophy in cricket. For the traditional Test Cricket, on the other hand, there is no equivalent competition. The Cricket World Cup has been held nine times so far, with most of the titles going to the team from Australia. In cricket, a distinction is made between
- the traditional test Cricket, which lasts five days and
- the one-day cricket, which only takes one day.

Also in 1983 the World Cup took place in England. This time the title was surprisingly won by India, who had the upper hand against the favourite West Indies.
In 1987, the World Cup was played jointly by India and Pakistan. For the first time, the team from Australia managed to secure the World Cup title.
At the World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand in 1992, South Africa, which had been excluded from the ICC for a time due to apartheid, was again allowed to participate in a tournament, so that the number of teams was increased. The winner was Pakistan.
In 1996, at the World Cup tournament in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka the number of participants was increased again, so that now 12 teams could compete. Sri Lanka won the final against Australia this year.
In 1999, Australia began to dominate, winning the World Cup three times in a row (in England in 1999, South Africa in 2003 and the West Indies in 2007).
This winning streak was interrupted in 2011 by India’s victory at home, was continued, however, with Australia’s win over New Zealand at their last World Cup tournament in 2015.

The players at Cricket
Cricket resembles American baseball in a way, although there are big differences between the two sports. In cricket, two teams, each consisting of eleven players, compete against each other. The game is divided into several rounds known as innings. The team that has the right to drive tries to get runs (points). The other team, which is on the field, again tries to kick out the batsmen of the opposing team. If ten of the eleven batsmen are eliminated, the inning ends. Then the teams change their positions and the batting team becomes the field team.
In the end, the team that achieves more runs in its innings wins than the rival team in its innings.
The playing field
In contrast to many other sports, the size and shape of a cricket pitch are not necessarily fixed. Basically, however, a grass pitch is used which has the shape of an oval and a diameter of about 100-140 metres. The field can be bordered by a white line, small flags or a fence.
- In the middle of the field is the pitch, which is about 20 meters long.
- At both ends of the pitch are attached the so-called wickets, which consist of three vertical stumps (rods).
- The stumps also have two bails, short crosspieces.
The rules
- Before the match, the two team captains toss a coin. The winner may choose whether his team acts first as a striking team or as a field team.
- While the field team uses all eleven players, the strike team sends only two players onto the field.
- The rest of the team is waiting for its mission. The two batsmen, who are equipped with rackets and protective equipment, position themselves on the wickets at their stroke line:
- The batsman on whom the ball is thrown by a bowler is called a striker.
His counterpart on the other wicket is the non-striker. - After the bowler has thrown the ball, the striker must hit the ball with his bat. Once he has done this, he runs towards the opposite wicket. His opponent does the same in the opposite direction.
- If the two strikers manage to change places, they get a run, which the opposing team tries to prevent by throwing the ball to a wicket and destroying it.
