The World Boxing Super Series (WBSS for short) is a boxing tournament that was created by promoter Kalle Sauerland. It is organized by Comosa AG.
Season 1 should have been held from September 2017 to May 2018. The winners of the tournament will receive a high prize money and the Muhammad Ali Trophy, created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga and named after the boxer Muhammad Ali; Ali’s daughter Laila Ali gave her consent. Gazzaniga designed the 1971 FIFA World Cup, which has been presented to the football world champion since 1974.
At this tournament, which is to initiate a redesign in boxing, eight boxers in cruiser weight and eight in super middle weight competed against each other in the 1st season. It consists of a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final. There are no rematches. The losers are eliminated. The fights take place on a global level at different locations. As usual in professional boxing, they are scheduled for 12 rounds of 3 minutes each.
Unlike the Super Six tournament, which took place from October 2009 to December 2011, and which saw US American Andre Ward win, there is a group of boxers who are permanently on standby to step in, even in the event of unexpected losses on the evening of the match. This ensured in relay 1 that there will be one winner in each of the two weight classes in May 2018. However, this concept could not be fully implemented – while the final fight in cruiser weight was postponed to July 2018, the final fight in super middle weight took place at the end of September 2018.
Relay 1 (2017-2018)
In relay 1 the following weight classes were represented: Cruiser weight, super middle weight.
Fight pairings in cruiser weight and details of the fights
The opening match of the WBSS tournament took place on 9 September 2017 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin between Marco Huck and Oleksandr Ussyk. Ussyk won the 10th round with a technical knockout.
In the second quarter final on 23 September 2017 Yunier Dorticos and Dmitri Kudrjaschow faced each other in the Alamodome in the US American city of San Antonio. Kudryazhov went already in round 2 after a hard right hand heavily knocked out.
In the Latvian capital Riga, the third quarter-finals between Mairis Briedis and Mike Perez took place in the Arena Riga on 30 September 2017. Briedis won unanimously on points. Both boxers received a points deduction.
On 21 October 2017 Murat Gassijew played against Krzysztof Włodarczyk in the Prudential Center in Newark, the largest city in the US state of New Jersey and won the third round with a classic K. o.. This fight was the last quarter final in the cruiser weight.
Ussyk was the first finalist. In the Arena Riga in Riga, the Ukrainian jurist won by majority vote on 27 January 2018. Two judges scored 115:113 each for Ussyk, while the third scored 114:114. This result was quite surprising due to the comparatively high knockout rate of both boxers. Briedis managed to get a strong start; he had a more decisive effect on the fight in the first six laps. Ussyk started a chase in the second half of the fight to catch up; he hit more, hit more, kept Briedis busy with his enormously strong jab and was thus able to drive the Latvian into a corner.
The second and last fight for the final between Gassiev and Dorticos was held in the multifunctional arena Bolshoi Ice Palace in Russian Sochi on February 3, 2018. Gassiev, the favourite in the fight, lived up to his role. He landed the clearer goals, was boxerically superior and had too good a double coverage that Dorticos could not pass. In turn 11 Dorticos was struck after a goal. The knockout came in the next and last round. Gassiev sent Dorticos to the ground twice before the fight was stopped after the third rainfall.
The final match was held at the Moscow Olympic Stadium on 21 July 2018 between Ussyk and Gassiev. Ussyk won unanimously and highly on points (120:108, 119:109, 119:109) with a “master performance” according to the media. Although Gassiev was able to score a few effect goals, Ussyk was more variable and scored more frequently, with combinations at the end. Ussyk also won the world championship belt of all major federations.
Fight pairings in the super middleweight and details of the fights
The first fight of the WBSS Super Middleweight Tournament took place on 16 September 2017 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool between Callum Smith and Erik Skoglund. Smith won by unanimous decision. Skoglund went down in lap 11 for the first time in his career.
For the first time in his career, Avni Yıldırım went down in the second quarter-final match against Chris Eubank in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart on 7 October 2017 already in the first round after a right uppercut. Eubank, who was the clear favourite of all bookmakers and almost all experts, did justice to his role when he knocked out Yıldırım in round 3 with a brute left hook. The Referee stopped the fight immediately.
George Groves and Jamie Cox met in the third quarter finals at Wembley Arena in London on 14 October 2017. Groves went into the duel as the clear favourite and won round 4 with a body hook through classic knockout. In the last quarter finals Jürgen Brähmer won against Rob Brant in the Schweriner Sport- und Kongresshalle on 27 October 2017 unanimously on points.
In the first semi-final on 17 February 2018, Groves, who is under contract to Sauerland, and Eubank faced each other in the Manchester Arena. The bookmakers saw Eubank as the clear favourite. However, a different Groves than expected was seen, which showed itself above all conditionally improved. With a strong tactical as well as technical performance Groves defeated Eubank despite dislocated shoulder by unanimous judge’s decision. The decisive factor for this victory was Groves’ leading hand, with which he was able to control Eubank and set the decisive actions.
In the second semi-final, Dutchman Nieky Holzken replaced Jürgen Brähmer, who was suffering from a flu-like infection, and thus competed against Callum Smith. The fight took place in the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung in Nuremberg on February 24, 2018. Holzken (former Muay-Thai fighter and kickboxer) sold better than most experts had expected, he went almost permanently with a strong cover to the front to get in there and score clear goals, which he managed to do once or twice. But it was not enough to win. Smith won as expected clearly, he won by unanimous judge’s decision. Holzken proved outstanding taker qualities and survived the fight without precipitation.
Unexpectedly, the final between the two British Groves and Smith took place at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 28 September 2018. Smith won by classic knockout in the 7th round and thus the Ali Trophy in the super middleweight.
Relay 2 (2018-2019)
In season 2 the following weight classes are represented: Cruiserweight, Halbwelterweight, Bantamweight.
