Beach volleyball is a sport that is becoming increasingly popular with a wide audience, not least due to the great successes of the German beach volleyball players Ludwig/Walkenhorst and Brink/Reckermann. At the same time, the sport, just like the indoor volleyball version, has a comprehensive set of rules – and that’s why laymen and beginners always have questions about the beach volleyball rules.
Here are the answers to all important questions about beach volleyball rules. This text is intended for beginners who want to quickly and easily understand the basics of beach volleyball rules – but even advanced volleyball players can certainly learn something. Beach vs. indoor volleyball: 2 unequal brothers!
Beach volleyball game idea
2 teams face each other on a sandy field separated by a net. Up to 3 ball touches (the block contact counts differently than in the hall!) a team has to bring the ball with the opponent on the ground. The ball is brought into play by serving. The German beach volleyball player Chantal Laboureur climbs up to attack!
Structure
- a team of 2 players (no substitutes or coaches allowed) wins a game if it wins 2 sets
- each sentence has 21 points (except for the 3rd sentence). At 21:21 tie, the set continues until a team has taken a 2-point lead.
- in case of 1:1 set tie, the decisive 3rd set is played until 15 points are counted according to the rally point method: If the serving team scores, it keeps the serve; if the accepting team scores, it receives the right to serve.
- all 7 points the sides are changed, in the 3rd set all 5 points are changed
- If a page change is “forgotten”, it is carried out late. The score remains unchanged
- The pause between sets is 1 minute.
How does a team get a point?
- the ball touches the ground of the opposing field
- the opposing team makes a mistake, i.e.
- a non-compliant action
- If several errors occur, only the first one is penalized
- If 2 mistakes occur simultaneously between both teams, the decision will be based on double mistakes (repetition).
Field & Rotations
The entire playing area is divided into different areas. The actual playing field…
- is 16 m long and 8 m wide, each half is 8 x 8 m large. At least 3 meters of open space around the field are required, as well as 7 meters above the field with no hindquarters. The lines belong to the field (touching the line with the ball is equivalent to a point for the attacking team). The 5-8 cm wide lines must be anchored in the sand. The lines must stand out clearly in colour from the sand.
There is no center line. Crossing the line is allowed as long as no opposing player is hindered or touched. - A net separates both halves of the pitch. In the
- This is 2.43 m high for men.
- for women 2,24 m
- and in the mixed area 2.35 m high
Field surface
The surface must be flat and made of sand. No objects may be a risk of injury for the players. According to FIVB rules, the sand should be at least 40 cm deep and fine.
Impact zone
The entire width of the base line is the impact zone.
Lighting
Too little light does not allow a game any more and means risk of injury for the players. In large tournaments, 1000-1500 lux must prevail 1m above the playing surface.
Weather
The game is played in any weather. In case of thunderstorms the game will be aborted.
Game situations and mistakes
- The referee releases the ball for play with his whistle.
- with his final whistle the game is over.
- the ball is “in” if part of its circumference touches the pitch or the boundary line
- the ball is “off” if it does not touch the field
- touches an object or a non-playing person
- Antenna, post… touched
- flies over the network outside the crossing sector/antennas
- traversed under the net
- the ball may be played with any part of the body (except when serving)
- the ball must be hit, throwing/holding is forbidden
- 2 contacts in succession (exception block) are forbidden
- no other players or objects may help when touching the ball
Ball touches
- 3 ball touches are allowed
- 2 players may touch the ball at the same time. Only one contact remains.
- 2 opponents touch the ball at the same time above the net and the ball remains in play, 3 more contacts remain
- a pressure ball/ held ball between 2 opponents is not a mistake
- a hard-hit ball may be held in the upper pass for a moment (interpretation by the referee)
- Touching the ball on the opponent’s side before or during the opponent’s attack is prohibited.
- an attack as praise with the open hand is forbidden
Playing the ball on the other side of the net in the upper pass is only allowed at right angles to the shoulder axis. This does not apply if the ball accidentally flies to the opponent.
Rules to the network
- the ball may touch the net
- Players are prohibited from touching the net when actively participating in the game.
- Random contact of the hair with the net is allowed.
- After hitting the ball, the player may touch all objects (posts…) outside the net.
- It is not a mistake if the ball is played against the net and the net touches an opponent.
Block rules
Blocking is a defense above the net near the net.
- after a block, the block player may touch the ball once more
- the crossing of the block is allowed, as long as it does not hinder the opponent
- after one block a team has 2 ball contacts available
- blocking of the opponent’s serve is prohibited
Viewing block
The serving team must not obstruct the view of the serving player and the service trajectory.
- If the team that served makes a point, the same player serves again.
- The ball must be hit with the hand or arm of an arm after a previous throw-off.
- The ball may only be thrown once, there is no 2nd attempt.
- The ball may touch the net edge (inside the antennas) during impact. Crossing or falling below the baseline during serve
- is considered a mistake.
Before the game, the service order is determined by the captain. This must be maintained throughout the entire set. If a wrong player serves, the opponent receives one point.
Timeout Regulations
Each team can request one time-out (30 seconds) per set using hand signals. This must be done before the kick-off. Both teams can apply for a time-out immediately after each other without having to play a point in between. At national or international tournaments, a technical timeout will take place after 21 points have been played (e.g. 13:8). This time-out lasts 60 seconds and takes place only once per set.
Match ball in beach volleyball
- The ball must be spherical, made of a leather-like material and certified.
- The circumference is 65 to 67 cm with a weight of 260 to 280 g and a pressure of 0.175 to 0.225 kg/cm2.
- The Molten Beachvolleyball V5B5000 is the official match ball in 8 national associations.
Crew composition
The captain…
- represents his team in the draw (side selection, serve/acceptance)
- signs the sheet after the match and confirms the result of the match
Both players…
- acknowledge the applicable rules and accept the decision of the arbitral tribunal
- may talk to each other during the game
- may communicate with the arbitral tribunal (request explanations of rules, time-out…)
- If a player injures himself, the team is incomplete and loses the game.
Equipment rules
- As a rule, the clothing consists of short trousers and a shirt, or a bikini. Headgear and sunglasses are allowed. At big tournaments the tops are provided with numbers 1 and 2.
- Players must play barefoot (except beach socks or tapes)
- On request, other warming textiles may be worn, or the jersey may be exchanged in wet conditions.
Sanctions and delays
- the first delay shall be penalised with a warning
- the second delay in the same set is penalized with loss of play
- Small inaccuracies are punished with a warning, which is neither entered nor has consequences.
- the yellow card is the last warning signal for the whole team
“improper” behavior such as commenting (not insulting). Draws a red card and a loss of play. - offensive behaviour means showing the yellow and red card by the referee. The player must leave the pitch for the set. The team is incomplete for the current set.
- the assault: the referee also shows the yellow and red cards, but separately in the hands. The player is disqualified and the game is lost because the team is incomplete.
- Also incorrect behaviour before and between the sets will be penalised.
Injuries or interruptions
- If an injury or other impairment occurs, the move is repeated.
- Injured players will be allowed a recovery time of 5 minutes per game
- If an injured player cannot continue playing, the game is lost (incomplete team).
- If the game is interrupted longer than 4 hours by external influences (once/several times), the game must be repeated, otherwise the game is continued with the same score.
