The Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB) is the highest league in French men’s club basketball. The LNB hosts the French Men’s Basketball Championship.

The LNB was founded in 1987 and is divided into two divisions (divisions): The Pro A (first division) and the Pro B (second division). French basketball championships have been held since 1921.

History

The Comité des Clubs de Haut Niveau was founded on 27 June 1987 with the aim of establishing two professional divisions for the 1987/88 season. The Comité included all clubs of the then two highest leagues, National 1A and National 1B. The Comité was replaced by the Ligue Nationale de Basket on 24 November 1990.

For the 1992/93 season, the two professional divisions were renamed National A1 and National A2. In the following season, the names were changed again. Since then the leagues have been called Pro A and Pro B.

Pro A

The league consists of 18 teams that play two games against each other in the regular season. The eight best placed teams will play for the French championship in the playoffs after the regular season. The two worst placed teams at the end of the regular season will be relegated to the Pro B. The teams with the lowest play-offs will be the ones to play in the playoffs.

The playoffs are currently played after the best-of-three (quarter-finals) or best-of-five mode (semi-finals and finals). The winner of the title French Champion is also directly qualified for the ULEB Euroleague.

Pro B

The league consists of 18 teams that play two games against each other in the regular season. The eight best placed teams play after the regular season in the playoffs (quarter finals and semi finals each 2 games, final 1 game) for the promotion to the Pro A. The champion and the runner-up are promoted. The two worst placed teams after the regular season are relegated to the Amateur League National 1.

All-Star Game & Leaders Cup

In addition to the Pro A and Pro B championships, the LNB organizes two other important events every year: the All-Star Game and the Leaders Cup.

In the All-Star Game, a selection of the best French players meets a selection of the best foreign players. Since 2002, the All-Star Game has always taken place in December (Sunday between Christmas and New Year) at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris. In 1987 the first All-Star Game of the LNB was played, at that time still in the mode east against west (until 1992).

The Leaders Cup (formerly Semaine des As, Tournois des As) is a tournament in which the first eight teams of the first half of the season can participate (Pro A). Since 2013, the Leader’s Cup has been held on a weekend in February. The matches will be played as direct elimination matches at the Disney Events Arena in Disneyland Paris.
