The foundation of the league
The Basketball Bundesliga was founded in 1964 and is part of the German Basketball Association. Today it plays with 18 teams. With regard to the founding year, it is interesting to note that although the league was founded in 1964, operations did not begin until around two years later on 1 October 1966. In terms of the German Championship, however, the history goes even further, as this has already been determined since 1939, but not yet in the form of a Bundesliga season.
The title holders of the Basketball Bundesliga
In the first season 1966/1967 MTG Gießen became the first champion of the then newly founded Basketball Bundesliga. In the meantime numerous title holders have been added, whereby the team appearing today as Bayer Giants Leverkusen with 14 championships is record champion of the basketball Bundesliga. The team had its greatest successes in the 90s as TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The teams of ALBA BERLIN and Brose Baskets Bamberg, which previously also won the title as GHP Bamberg, lie on a divided second place with 8 championships.
The different names of the Bundesliga
For the 2016/2017 season, the Basketball Bundesliga will operate as the “easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga” and “easyCredit BBL”, respectively, even though the Bundesliga has already been inspired by various namesakes. The year 1994 was the beginning, when the Bundesliga was separated from the DBB and from now on the Veltins Basketball Bundesliga is responsible for the match operation. In the year 2000 the renaming was carried out in s.Oliver basketball federal league, before between 2003 and 2009 the designation basketball federal league was used. In recent years, the highest German league was known as Beko Basketball Bundesliga, as the league had been known under this name since 2009.
Admission requirements for participation
For a team to participate in the Basketball Bundesliga or the easyCredit BBL, a number of requirements must be met. First of all, the statutes stipulate that a sporting qualification must be made via the Second Basketball Bundesliga or the ProA. Likewise, the participant must run a junior program that corresponds to the statues of the Bundesliga. In terms of general conditions, a budget of one million euros and a venue with at least 3000 seats is required.
Events around the Basketball Bundesliga
The search for the German Champion is not the only event or activity of easyCredit BBL. The league itself also hosts the BBL All-Star-Game and the so-called Top Four. In the Top Four, the cup winner is sought, although the qualification for this is achieved via the table standings of the basketball Bundesliga. Also to be mentioned is the Champions Cup, which describes the duel between the cup winner and the German champion that takes place before the new season.
