The FIBA Europe Cup is a competition held under the umbrella of FIBA Europe for European men’s basketball club teams. It forms the third most important of all competitions in the annual European Basketball Cup behind the ULEB Euroleague and the ULEB Eurocup.
History
In summer 2015, FIBA decided to discontinue the EuroChallenge and offer more competition with a new competition, the FIBA Europe Cup, the ULEB, which has organised the most important European Cup competitions since 2001.
Since the ULEB, Euroleague and Eurocup competitions have registered far more prestigious and larger clubs and will therefore play there in the 2015/16 season, the FIBA Europe Cup – like its predecessor, the EuroChallenge – is only the third most important European cup in basketball.
The first edition 2015/16 was won by the Fraport Skyliners from Germany.
Game mode
The FIBA Europe Cup will be played in the 2018/19 season as follows:
1st group stage
In the 1st group phase, 32 teams in 8 groups (A-H) play against each other in home and away matches until each team has completed six matches. The two best teams in each group qualify for the second group stage.
2nd group stage
In the 2nd group phase, the remaining 16 teams play against each other in 4 groups (I-L) in home and away matches until each team has completed six matches. The two best teams in each group qualify for the round of 16.
K.O. Round
Of these 16 participants, the eight group winners and runners-up from the second group stage and the eight “relegates” from the group stage of the 2017/18 Basketball Champions League (fifth and sixth place finishers in the four groups there) will qualify for the round of 16, from which the knockout stages will continue.
The knockout system will be used and the results of the first and second legs will be added together. Consequently, a draw in the first leg, which only serves as an intermediate result, is possible and only a draw after the addition of both game results requires extra time to determine the winner in the second leg. This mode is maintained until the final matches to determine the winner of the title.
