The Canadian Football League (CFL; French: Ligue canadienne de football; German: Kanadische Footballliga) is a professional sports league in Canada in which Canadian football is played. The league consists of nine teams: four teams in the Eastern Conference and five teams in the Western Conference. At times, they also tried to include some US teams in the league, but failed to do so. In its current form, the CFL has been in existence since 1958.

The first Canadian football teams played in the Canadian Rugby Football Union (CRFU), founded in 1884. In 1884, the CRFU mutated into the umbrella organization of several leagues under the name Canadian Rugby Union. Between the 1930s and 1950s, two subleagues of the CRU – the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union from the East and the Western Interprovincial Football Union from the West – developed into professional leagues and together formed the Canadian Football Council, which completely left the CRU in 1958 and from then on operated under the name Canadian Football League.
The Grey Cup, CFL Champion’s Cup
The Regular Season starts in mid-June and ends in early November. In these 21 weeks, each team plays eighteen times. A home and away match against each team of the other division, two or three matches against a team of their own division. In the middle of the season, there are two match days with only two pairings each. This means that each team has a bye week in the season.
The play-offs start in November. After the Regular Season the leading team of each division is qualified for the division final. The second placed team has to play against the third placed team for participation in the division final. However, if the fourth-placed team of the other division has a better score, it will take part in the elimination instead of the third-placed team, which is known as the Crossover Rule. The two winners of the Division Final, the Division Champions, play in the Grey Cup for the championship title of the Canadian Football League.
