The 2018 WTA Finals was a women’s tennis tournament held in Singapore. It was the 48th edition of the singles competition and the 43rd edition of the doubles competition. The tournament was held in Singapore’s Covered Stadium and featured the eight best players of the season in the singles box and the eight best pairs in the doubles box. It is the largest of the two season-ending championships of the WTA Tour 2018.

Tournament

Singapore’s indoor stadium will host the WTA Tour Championships in 2018 for the fourth time.

The WTA 2018 Finals will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and is the 48th edition of the event. The tournament was conducted by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) as part of the 2018 WTA Tour.

Format

The event featured the eight best players in singles the event consists of one against all, divided into two groups of four. During the first four days of competition, each player faces the other three players in her group, the first two from each group advance to the semifinals. The player who has qualified first in her group faces the player who qualifies second in the other group, and vice versa. The winners of each semifinal face each other in the final for the championship.

The final positions in each group, from the first to the last, will be established on the basis of the following hierarchy of rules:

  • Highest number of victories.
  • More matches played.
  • If 2 players are tied, the winner of the match between them will be in front.
  • If 3 players are tied:
    • More matches played.
    • Higher percentage of won sets.
    • Higher percentage of won games.

If in application of one of these 3 criteria one of the players broke the tie, it would go back to point 3 to break the tie between the remaining 2.
