It is a series of tennis tournaments that are played in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. The ATP Challenger Tour, known until the end of 2008 as the ATP Challenger Series, is an international series of men’s professional tennis tournaments, which allows players to earn enough points in the ranking to try to enter the level of ATP tournaments. They are administered by the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP).
History
The first Challengers events were held in 1978. Eighteen tournaments were held in the same year. Currently, the schedule is much longer. In 2008, for example, 178 Challengers level tournaments were held, played in more than 40 countries, with a total prize pool of $10.7 million.
Award and points
Challengers tournaments offer cash prizes ranging from $35,000 to $150,000, which together with the fact that the tournament offers accommodation (food and lodging) for players, determines the number of points a player earns for each game in the tournament.
Offering hosting increases the points distributed in a level. Points for a Challenger champion range from 75 points for a tournament from $50,000 (or $35,000 with hosting) to 125 points for a $150,000 with hosting, as opposed to ATP level tournaments, which offer total rewards from $400,000 to over $6 million, with points between 250 and 2000 for the champion.
Challengers Qualification
Generally, players who are succeeding in Future tournaments, or who are failing in ATPs, are the tennis players who participate in Challengers.
On a graded scale, Futures are considered to be easy professional level tournaments, Challengers are the average tournaments, and ATPs are the top level tournaments.
Challengers players are usually ranked between 50 and 300 in the world.
