The ATP Tournament of Basel (officially Swiss Indoors) is a tennis tournament of the category ATP World Tour 500. The tournament takes place annually in late autumn in Münchenstein near Basel. It is the largest sporting event in Switzerland and the third largest indoor tournament in the world.
History
The event was first held in 1970 in a specially constructed air dome. In 1975, the event moved to the newly built St. Jakobshalle. In 1977, the tournament suddenly gained popularity when it succeeded in engaging the then world-class player Björn Borg. The trading company Oettinger Davidoff Group had been title sponsor of the tournament with the Davidoff brand since 1994 – however, title sponsoring with tobacco advertising was no longer continued after 17 years as this led to massive restrictions insofar as tobacco advertising can be subject to various restrictions.
Since 2009 the tournament belongs to the category ATP World Tour 500. The prize money was doubled from 850’000 to more than 1,7 million Euro, the date was postponed from October to the beginning of November. In May 2012 it was announced that the ATP had extended its status as an ATP 500 tournament until 2018. The prize money was increased by around ten percent to EUR 1.935 million and thus adjusted to inflation. With a budget of CHF 14 million, it is Switzerland’s largest regular sporting event. The tournament also offers players one of the last opportunities to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Roger Federer has won his home tournament nine times so far, three of them in a row. Since 2000, he has reached the finals a total of 14 times – ten times in a row from 2006 to 2015, both records in the Open Era. This makes him the most successful player in Basel to date.
