The Bellator MMA, formerly known as the Bellator Fighting Championships, is a U.S. mixed martial arts organization based in Chicago. It is owned by the Viacom group and is chaired by Scott Coker.
It is considered the second largest MMA federation in the United States after the UFC and the largest based on knockout tournaments, a formula that was changed in 2014; even worldwide it is one of the largest for spectators at events, viewers and athletes in the world rankings.
Bellator, in Latin, means “warrior”: the artwork of the organization is clearly inspired by the culture of the Roman Empire and the numbers reported for each event are graphically based on the Roman numbering system. The events of the federation are broadcast in the United States on free TV channels and over time the promotion has changed broadcaster several times: ESPN Deportes in 2009, Fox Sports Networks in 2010, MTV2 and Epix from 2011 to 2012, Spike TV from 2013. In Italy the matches were broadcast on GXT and from 2015 on Dmax.
On May 17, 2014 the promotion achieved the first pay-per-view in its history with the event Bellator CXX, which was attended by athletes such as Michael Chandler, Quinton Jackson, Muhammed Lawal, Tito Ortiz, Alexander Shlemenko and Cheick Kongo: the preliminary card not on pay-per-view recorded an average of 776,000 users and a peak of 962,000, while estimates of sales were over 100,000 purchases. Since 2013, the Fight Master: Bellator MMA program has been launched, a reality show along the lines of the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter.
In June 2014 founder Bjorn Rebney and president Tim Danaher left the organization[3], being replaced by former president and founder of the Strikeforce Scott Coker; at the same time the system of elimination tournaments was changed, which were no longer organized with regular expiration, and even the calendar of events was no longer seasonal.
Structure of the championships
Bellator FC is structured on a system that includes both samples in different weight categories and various direct elimination tournaments, also one for each weight category.
Generally, tournaments are organized in which the winners are declared the first contenders on the champion’s belt and rewarded with $ 100,000; from 2012, the possibility of rematching a title challenge that ended with a questionable verdict is provided for, while from 2014, a wrestler who had already won a category tournament is eligible at any time for a further challenge to the title without having to enter a new tournament.
The championships are declared as World Cup and therefore there is no distinction for nationality of the wrestlers and there are divisions both male and female, and generally, moreover, the Bellator does not sign exclusive contracts with its wrestlers, who can then compete simultaneously in other promotions.
From 2014 the direct elimination tournaments were no longer organized with a regular deadline, thus allowing a free choice of contenders for the titles by the matchmaker of the promotion, the calendar of events, moreover, was restructured and was no longer organized in seasons characterized by a show every Friday: since then, in fact, events are held throughout the year and without a regular deadline.
Rules
The rules used are the same as those of the Nevada commission, but as far as shots are concerned they vary between league and tournaments: in tournaments, in fact, it is forbidden to hit the opponent with elbows because of the high probability of injuring the hit wrestler and of remaining excluded from the tournament even if the winner were to come out of the match.
Generally, the scores awarded by the judges for each round are ten to nine for the winner of the round; rarely are less than nine points awarded and are generally deductions for irregularities committed by the wrestler.
Bellator uses a circular cage.
Round
The matches consist of three five-minute rounds, except for the title matches which are five rounds. There is a one-minute break between each round.
Weight classes
Until March 2013 Bellator could also boast some female categories: among them the straw weight category was the most active and the only one that saw a champion’s belt at stake; later they were all abolished until August 2014, when the promotion decided to start the category of female feather weights.
The first flyweight meeting of the promotion took place only in 2014 with the Bellator CXV event.
