The Zimbabwe Premier League, officially and for reasons of sponsorship Castle Lager Premier League, is the highest category of professional football in Zimbabwe. The league was founded in 1962 as the National League of Rhodesia when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom, and is organised by the Zimbabwe Football Association.
History of the League
The first edition of the National Rhodesian Football League took place in 1962, when Bulawayo Rovers won the inaugural championship in Rhodesia. Since then, the championship has been largely dominated by teams from the country’s capital, Harare (Salisbury until 1982), and the second largest city Bulawayo. All but three of the country’s 50 championships have been won by a team based in one of these two cities.
Form
The league consists of 16 teams, which play a total of 30 games in roundtrip games, The season runs from March to November. At the end of the season four teams are relegated to the lower division and an equal number promoted.
The champion team obtains qualification to the CAF Champions League.
