The Toppserien is the top series of the Norwegian women’s football championship and is placed under the aegis of the Norges Fotballforbund (NFF). The first season was in 1984 and currently twelve teams participate. The Toppserien is held annually, starting in March and ending in November. Trondheims-Ørn won the most championships (7). For the 2017-2018 season Toppserien is the twelfth women’s football championship in Europe according to the ranking drawn up by UEFA.
History
Between 1977 and 1983 the Norwegian football championship was played on a regional level, until in 1984 the 1st division was formed (first division in Italian). For the first three seasons (1984 to 1986) the 1st division was divided into three groups with geographical division of the participating teams: Østland group, Vestland group and Trøndelag group. The winning teams of the three groups faced each other in a mini-circle for the award of the title. From the 1987 season onwards the 1st division had only one round and the team that finished the championship in first place was designated champion of Norway. In the era of the 1st division, Asker and Sprint-Jeløy won four titles each, in addition to a constant presence in the top three positions.
In 1996 the highest series of the Norwegian championship was renamed Eliteserien and the 1. divisjon became the second series. In 2000 Eliteserien was renamed Toppserien.
From 1993 to 2004 Trondheims-Ørn remained firmly in the top three positions, winning seven championships and finishing second four times and third for once. In the midst of the seven titles of Trondheims-Ørn was inserted the Asker, winner of two championships in 1998 and 1999. In particular, in the 1998 season Asker managed to finish the championship by winning all 18 matches. Trondheims-Ørn was followed by Kolbotn and then Røa, winners of three and five national titles respectively. In 2008 Asker went bankrupt and most of its players moved to the newborn Stabæk Fotball Kvinner. The last few years have seen the success of Stabæk in two editions and LSK Kvinner in three editions.
Format
The formula of the championship is a round of 12 Italian teams with 11 races outward and 11 return for a total of 22 days, with opening in March and closing in November . The scoring system provides 3 points for the winning team of the match, 1 point each in case of a draw and no points for the defeated team. The winner wins the championship, is Norway’s champion and joins the UEFA Women’s Champions League the following season. For the 2015-2016 season, the runner-up also wins the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2016-2017. The last ranked player is downgraded to 1. divisjon. The team ranked eleventh participates in a play-off with a team of 1. divisjon for a place in Toppserien.
